The seminar was attended by the secretary of CEN/TC138. Tlie representativity of the working groups was satisfactory, since 6 out of 8 were represented. Feedback was received from several working groups and taken into account in the final draft. 

The Protein Advisory Group, ad hoc, is the working group of the WHO United Nations system involving WHO, EAO, and the United Nations International Childten s Emergency Eund (UNICEE). It has developed guidelines for the evaluation of novel sources of protein, eg, single-cell protein ... 

The working group takes comments into consideration in preparing a revised draft. The topic leader must be a representative of a regulatory authority at this stage.

Each working group has a corresponding chairperson who champions requests for proposals (RPPs) from any interested parties. Validation of the analytical methods for food of animal origin has to be performed with milk, egg, meat, and fat. The latter is required only if log Pqav is >3 and metabolism studies indicate significant residues in fat, because in this case it is likely that an MRL will be set. Other tissues such as kidney or liver must be validated only if an MRL is set or proposed for these tissues. The issue of the general necessity of analytical methods for food of animal origin is not addressed in Directive 96/46/EC or SANCO/825/00. At this moment, the Working Group Pesticide Residues proposes an MRL on a case-by-case basis. However, a pragmatic approach is presented in SANCO/825/00. 

Tables I and II present the results of the Work Group discussions for the screening and site-specific level models, respectively. The assessment in these tables is based on a ranking scale between 0 and 100 0 indicates situations where no testing has been attempted and 100 identifies areas where extensive testing has been completed with sufficient post-audits to validate the predictive capability of relevant models. The scores can also be interpreted to mean the extent to which additional field testing would improve our understanding of how well the models represent natural systems. It is important to note that the scores do not indicate model accuracy per se they show the degree to which current field testing has been able to identify or estimate model accuracy.

Successful development of fibre optic chemical sensors requires the cooperation of many specialists in various fields of science. Scientists in analytical chemistry, polymer science, material science, optoelectronics and electronics etc. can be involved in this multidisciplinary task. Depending on the application of the sensor biologists, medical doctors or environmentalists can also be incorporated to the working group. Although, the contribution of all specialists cannot be classified by the importance, analytical chemistry and material science seem to be the key to the success.

The Working Group on Status Epilepticus recommends that phenobar-bital be given after a BZ plus phenytoin has failed. Most practitioners agree that phenobarbital is the long-acting anticonvulsant of choice in patients with hypersensitivity to the hydantoins or in those with cardiac conduction abnormalities.

ISO, IUPAC and AOAC INTERNATIONAL have co-operated to produce agreed protocols on the Design, Conduct and Interpretation of Collaborative Studies 14 and on the Proficiency Testing of [Chemical] Analytical Laboratories .11 The Working Group that produced these protocols has prepared a further protocol on the internal quality control of data produced in analytical laboratories. The document was finalised in 1994 and published in 1995 as the Harmonised Guidelines For Internal Quality Control In Analytical Chemistry Laboratories .12 The use of the procedures outlined in the Protocol should aid compliance with the accreditation requirements specified above.

All reaction parameters including volume rates of the hydrogen, organic and aqueous phase as well as the partial pressure of hydrogen and the reaction temperature are recorded on a PC and can be controlled by process control software, which was developed in the working group.
