The success in reaching the goals which are predicted in the nutrition policy, depend on the research in progress. An increased knowledge of the relation between nutrition and health requires comprehension of the nutrients, among others how an insufficient supply of different nutrients could lead to or be a part of the development of diseases. 

In Sweden and Norway the eating pattern are rather common, and we have more or less the same aim for our nutrition policy. More unrefined cereal products is an important factor in this effort for better eating habits. 

Beyond the sixteen countries of the Mediterranean basin, principles of the Mediterranean diet are adopted as national nutrition policy by the United Nations, World Health Organization, and more than thirty developed countries.

The available data allow only a very approximate estimate of minimal requirements for these trace elements in the animal species studied no information is available that would allow an estimate of the human requirement or of the adequacy of the dietary intake in man. While it is permissible to postulate essentiality in man for an element that has been shown to be essential in several animal species it is not possible to predict whether any one of the "new trace elements" does or does not present practical problems of marginal or deficient intakes in human population groups. Future research can be expected to provide the facts on which such an assessment can be based. In the interim it appears prudent to include the possibility of essential functions of these new trace elements in man in our nutrition planning and nutrition policies.
