The Broader Context

One example of a quantitative measure of molecular chirality is the continuous chirality measure (CCM) [39, 40]. It was developed in the broader context of continuous symmetry measures. A chital object can be defined as an object that lacks improper elements of symmetry (mirror plane, center of inversion, or improper rotation axes). The farther it is from a situation in which it would have an improper element of symmetry, the higher its continuous chirality measure.

The coupling of electronic and vibrational motions is studied by two canonical transformations, namely, normal coordinate transformation and momentum transformation on molecular Hamiltonian. It is shown that by these transformations we can pass from crude approximation to adiabatic approximation and then to non-adiahatic (diabatic) Hamiltonian. This leads to renormalized fermions and renotmahzed diabatic phonons. Simple calculations on H2, HD, and D2 systems are performed and compared with previous approaches. Finally, the problem of reducing diabatic Hamiltonian to adiabatic and crude adiabatic is discussed in the broader context of electronic quasi-degeneracy. 

In the broader context we must consider safety as it applies to a long list of topics. For every firework display there is the safety of the general public to consider. In the broader context of chemical reactivity a feature that makes electron transfer reactions distinctive is the close interplay between theory and experiment that has been applied to their study. This interplay has led to rapid advances and a clear insight into how electron transfer occurs. To a large degree, it has also dictated how the contents of a chapter are organized. 

Understanding the invention as a whole also means placing the invention into the broader context of what the invention accomplishes in relation to what the art as a whole teaches. For example, consideration of whether the invention discovers the source or cause of a particular problem and whether the problem itself was known in the prior art are part of understanding the invention as a whole. Thus an obvious solution to a nonobvious source of a problem can lead to a patentable invention provided that the solution to the problem was not the same solution used for a similar problem known in the art. To better understand this principle, let s look at a hypothetical problem. 

Several excellent reviews currently exist on particular aspects of marine chemical ecology,1-6 so this chapter does not attempt to provide a comprehensive or historic overview, but rather tries to provide a sound conceptual discussion of the diversity and importance of chemically mediated interactions involving mobile invertebrates. Due to space constraints, not all relevant studies can be included, and recent studies are sometimes cited in favor of more classical work, as these provide similar conceptual information but often use more advanced methodologies and provide greater access to other literature on the topic. Where possible, this chapter highlights studies that assess the importance of chemically mediated interactions within the broader context of ecology and evolutionary biology.

The principal therapies employed for the treatment of drug overdose are shown in Table 8.1. They can be divided into three major categories (1) initial decontamination (2) measures to enhance elimination and (3) specific antidotes. During the past several years there has been a change in emphasis within some of these categories. In any event, they are all used within the broader context of appropriate supportive care. 

It has been a major point of interest in the study of small metal particles to determine the precise point (if indeed there is a precise point) at which metallic character is lost. The broader context of this problem as it relates to other metals such as mercury and sodium has been discussed in a series of important papers by Peter Edwards and his associates.135,136 The difficulty seems to be that there is no agreed criterion by which membership of the metallic state can be judged, and various physical techniques give somewhat different answers because they sense slightly different aspects of electron behaviour. The question has been earnestly addressed in the case of gold, partly because of the familiar sensitivity of catalytic activity to particle size as noted above (Section 2.1) the way in which electrons are used to form metallic bonds determines the character of the free valences at the surface, and hence the kind of chemisorption bond that is formed with the reactants. 

The plant molecular systematist is confronted with three major practical issues when initiating a survey of land plants collection of plant tissue (location, type of tissue, quantity, preservation, transport, etc.), method of macromolecule extraction, and molecular technique used. These three factors are closely intertwined, and each can, and often does, have an influence on the others. The practical issues discussed in this chapter must therefore be considered in the broader context of issues relating to macromolecule isolation (see [12] in this volume) and the kind of molecular information to be obtained (see Section II in this volume). 

In this chapter, we will review the evidence suggesting a role for specific synaptic vesicle-associated proteins in schizophrenia. First, we present a brief overview of the synaptic vesicle cycle in the broader context of synaptic neurotransmission at chemical synapses. We then describe the experimental evidence linking specific molecular components of the synaptic vesicle to schizophrenia. Since not all synaptic vesicle proteins have been studied in relationship to schizophrenia, this review focuses only on those proteins for which such an effort was made. Finally, we describe the potential roles these proteins could play in the context of current etiological theories of schizophrenia, and discuss the relevance of the experimental findings in the context of this enigmatic disorder.
