It has been a major point of interest in the study of small metal particles to determine the precise point (if indeed there is a precise point) at which metallic character is lost. The broader context of this problem as it relates to other metals such as mercury and sodium has been discussed in a series of important papers by Peter Edwards and his associates.135,136 The difficulty seems to be that there is no agreed criterion by which membership of the metallic state can be judged, and various physical techniques give somewhat different answers because they sense slightly different aspects of electron behaviour. The question has been earnestly addressed in the case of gold, partly because of the familiar sensitivity of catalytic activity to particle size as noted above (Section 2.1) the way in which electrons are used to form metallic bonds determines the character of the free valences at the surface, and hence the kind of chemisorption bond that is formed with the reactants. [Pg.55]

While we could probably trace the appearance of excess electrons In fluids to prehistoric thunderstorms, a more likely starting point for our discussion Is man s discovery of metal ammonia solutions. It had been widely believed that the German chemist Weyl (1864) was the first to study this Interesting system In 1863 since he published the first accounts of his studies In the Annals of Physics In 1864. However, Peter Edwards (1982) discovered In a laboratory notebook dated November 1808, almost fifty years earlier, that Sir Humphry Davy had made very detailed studies of potassium exposed to ammonia gas (dry gas as he noted most precisely) leading to potassium-ammonia solutions. These studies were apparently never published, although he clearly described the unique features of the blue and bronze solutions. [Pg.143]

A valuable source of up-to-date reviews of many aspects of MSE is a series of books. Annual Reviews of Materials Science, published for the last 30 years. There has been one extensive series of high-level multiauthor treatments right across the entire spectrum of MSE, in the form of 25 books collectively entitled Materials Science and Technology A Comprehensive Treatment (1991-2000), masterminded by Peter Haasen, Edward Kramer and myself. The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds has been published since 1950 under the initial editorship of Arnold Weissberger, and later, until his death in 1984, under the joint editorship of Arnold Weissberger and Edward C. Taylor. In 1997, Peter Wipf joined Prof. Taylor as editor. This series attempts to make the extraordinarily complex and diverse held of heterocyclic chemistry as organized and readily accessible as possible. Each volume has traditionally dealt with syntheses, reactions, properties, structure, physical chemistry, and utility of compounds belonging to a specihc ring system or class (e.g., pyridines, thiophenes, pyrimidines, three-membered ring systems).
