Texaco gasifiers

The first anhydride plant in actual operation using methyl acetate carbonylation was at Kingsport, Tennessee (41). A general description has been given (42) indicating that about 900 tons of coal are processed daily in Texaco gasifiers. Carbon monoxide is used to make 227,000 t/yr of anhydride from 177,000 t/yr of methyl acetate 166,000 t/yr of methanol is generated. Infrared spectroscopy has been used to foUow the apparent reaction mechanism (43). 

The gasification plant is equipped with two Texaco gasifiers, each capable of producing all of the synthesis gas required for operation of the complex. Eastman chose an entrained-bed gasification process for the Chemicals from Coal project because of three attractive features. The product gas composition using locally available coal is particularly suitable for production of the desired chemicals. Also, the process has excellent environmental performance and generates no Hquids or tars. EinaHy, the process can be operated at the elevated pressure required for the downstream chemical plants. 

The Texaco gasifier and a similar unit developed by The Dow Chemical Company are pressurized entrained gasifiers. At the top pulverized coal is mixed with reaction gas and is blown down into the gasifier. The reaction products leave from the side, and ash is blown down to a water pool where it is quenched. These units have operated at an Eastman Kodak facUity in Kingsport, Tennessee and at the Coolwater power station in California for an integrated combined cycle power plant. 

Eastman Chemical Company has operated a coal-to-methanol plant in Kingsport, Tennessee, since 1983. Two Texaco gasifiers (one is a backup) process 34 Mg/h (37 US ton/h) of coal to synthesis gas. The synthesis gas is converted to methanol by use of ICl methanol technology. Methanol is an intermediate for producing methyl acetate and acetic acid. The plant produces about 225 Gg/a (250,000 US ton/a) of acetic anhydride. Other relevant gasifier types are bubbling fluid beds being tested by Enerkem and the high-pressure high-temperature slurry-fed entrained flow Texaco gasifier.

Fluor Engineers and Constructors Inc., under contract with EPRI has completed a rather detailed study (8 ) of the cost of producing power via Texaco gasifiers and advanced design gas turbines and steam turbines. They conclude investment costs (mid-1976 dollars) to be 815 million for a plant gasifying 9600 T/D of moisture-free Illinois coal and producing 1150 megawatts of net power.

Acetic anhydride is used in the manufacture of cellulose acetate-based film, cigarette filters, and plastics. Eastman Chemical developed a process that is based on gasification of coal in a Texaco gasifier to make synthesis gas which then is converted to methanol. The methanol is converted to methyl acetate by esterification with acetic acid and then carbonylated. The carbonylation process uses rhodium salt catalysts with ligands and an iodine promoter [30].
