Also common is the occurrence of transitions between different crystalline forms under tensile stresses. We recall here, for instance, the solid-to-solid transitions under stress of nylon 6 [76], PVDF [77, 78], and polybutylene terephtalate (PBT) [79-83]. [Pg.202]

Generally, primary aliphatic alcohols are oxidized to their respective aldehydes, secondary aliphatic and aromatic alcohols to the corresponding ketones, and allyl and benzyl alcohols to their carboxylic acid or carboxylate ions. For instance, 2-propanol, acetaldehyde, and methyl-benzoate ions are oxidized quantitatively to acetone, acetate, and terephtalate ion respectively, while toluene is converted into benzoate ion with an 86% yield. Controlling the number of coulombs passed through the solution allows oxidation in good yield of benzyl alcohol to its aldehyde. For diols,502 some excellent selectivity has been reached by changing the experimental conditions such as pH, number of coulombs, and temperature. [Pg.499]

All water samples were collected in amber-polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottles and were kept at 4°C during shipment. Upon reception in the laboratory, samples were vacuum filtered through 1 pm glass fiber filters, followed by 0.45 pm nylon membrane filters, and were stored in the dark at —20°C until analysis. [Pg.192]

Prior to polymerization, p-xylene is first oxidized to terephthalic acid (TA) or dimethyl terephtalate (DMT). These diacid or dimethyl ester monomers are then polymerized via a condensation reaction with ethylene glycol to form the polyester. Prior to the development of a method to purify TA to make purified terephtahc acid (PTA, >99% pure) by the Mid-Century Corporation in the 1950s [10], DMT was the primary way to obtain the purified dicarboxylate. The Amoco Oil Company, now part of BP International, made several improvements to the PTA process since its inception [11]. Since the advent of the availability of PTA, it has become the monomer of choice over DMT. PTA avoids the complications of including methanol to enable purification and handling the methanol evolved during the polymerization to polyester. [Pg.232]

The Csajagi research group used a commercial X-Cube continuous flow reactor system [32] to perform similar reactions. The reactor is made of stainless steel, capable of reaching pressures of up to 150 bar, and equipped with preloaded catalyst cartridges. Monoamides of aryldicarboxylic acids are obtained in a reaction over a tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium catalyst using A-methylpyrrolidone as base [33]. Terephtalic acid was reported as the byproduct, but not the oc-ketoamide. [Pg.170]

It is necessary to note the application of the ethoxide in the synthesis of GeH4 (on reaction with NaAlH4) [1804] and that of glycols and derivatives of diatomic phenols for the preparation of cyclic ethers [51, 796, 1123, 1183, 1404, 1486] and germocins [572]. Phenoxides are proposed as catalysts of terephtalate polycondensation [827]. The application of Ge(OEt)4 in the sol-gel discussed in Chapter9. [Pg.290]

Polyethylene terephtalate (PETP) is a (saturated) polyester and is, like nylon, known for its large-scale use as a textile fibre. Moreover it is being applied at an increasing scale as a plastic, viz. in films, bottles (the PET-bottle ) and injection-mouldings. Though its stiffness decreases significantly above 70 °C, it remains a solid up to its melting point (255 °C). [Pg.17]

Polybutylene terephtalate (PBTP) differs in its chemical structure only slightly from PETP its melting point is somewhat lower and its processability is better. The applications in injection moulded articles are similar to those for PETP. [Pg.17]

Polyurethane-based FTPEs are produced by reacting fluorinated polyether diols with aromatic disocyanates. The resulting block copolymers contain fluorinated polyether soft segments.68 Another possible method of preparation of fluorinated TPE is dynamic vulcanization. Examples are a blend of a perfluoroplastic and a perfluoroelastomer containing curing sites or a combination of VDF-based fluo-roelastomers and thermoplastics, such as polyamides, polybutylene terephtalate, and polyphenylene sulhde.69 70... [Pg.156]
