All water samples were collected in amber-polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottles and were kept at 4°C during shipment. Upon reception in the laboratory, samples were vacuum filtered through 1 pm glass fiber filters, followed by 0.45 pm nylon membrane filters, and were stored in the dark at —20°C until analysis. [Pg.192]

Polyethylene terephtalate (PETP) is a (saturated) polyester and is, like nylon, known for its large-scale use as a textile fibre. Moreover it is being applied at an increasing scale as a plastic, viz. in films, bottles (the PET-bottle ) and injection-mouldings. Though its stiffness decreases significantly above 70 °C, it remains a solid up to its melting point (255 °C). [Pg.17]

In addition, among the polyesters, polyethylene terephtalate) or Dacron, is another important member. In Figure 2.39, the repeating unit of polyethylene terephtalate) is shown [8,195], This polymer is applied in the production of fabrics. [Pg.91]

The Danish minister of environment in 1988 announced that within a few years the manufacture and use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products had to be reduced as much as technically and economically possible due to their environmental impacts of production, use, and disposal. This preventive environmental policy was mainly based on the emission of hydrogen chloride and dioxins from waste incineration. A study of the technical, economic, and environmental consequences of a substitution was initiated by the National Agency of Environmental Protection. The goal was to collect background data for the upcoming negotiations between the environmental authorities and PVC-industry and manufacturers of PVC products in Denmark. The environmental assessment focused on PVC and 11 alternative materials, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephtalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyurethane (PUR), synthetic rubbers (EPDM, CR and SBR), paper, impregnated wood, and aluminum. ... [Pg.253]

Where possible, rainwater sampling system parts made of polyethylene, polypropylene and 5 litre capacity containers made also of polyethylene terephtalate were used for sampling. The materials employed during the sampling procedure (funnels, 5 liter capacity containers, additional vessels used to measure the volume) were well washed each... [Pg.371]

Transport experiments are usually carried out using Caco-2 cells grown on artificial filters (polycarbonate or polyethylene terephtalate) in wells. The chamber system is adapted to allow electrophysiological parameters such as potential difference to be measured in parallel so that cellular integrity can be monitored. [Pg.394]
