At our facility, the Temple University Hospital, which is one of four HCFA Chronic Ventilator-Demonstration sites, the complex and diverse problems of PMV patients are treated by a diverse team comprises pulmonologists, respiratory nurses, nutritionists, psychologists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and a social worker (Fig. 2). This unit emphasizes rehabilitation and restoration of functional status despite requirements for prolonged ventilation. Special needs of patients that require PMV addressed in this unit include evaluation of the optimum form of ventilator support, special attention to swallowing dysfunction, impaired communication skills, psychological dysfunction, nutritional repletion, respiratory muscle and whole body reconditioning, as well as close attention to new or changing medical conditions. [Pg.176]

Deborah DeEugenio, Pharm.D., B.C.P.S., is a 2001 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences (Philadelphia). She completed a residency in Pharmacy Practice at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (Philadelphia). Dr. DeEugenio is a member of the Temple University School of Pharmacy faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor and a Certified Antithrombotic Provider and a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. Her clinical activity takes place at Jefferson Heart Institute as part of the Jefferson Antithrombotics Therapy Service. The ambulatory clinic serves 400 patients on chronic anticoagulation therapy and provides continuous monitoring and education to these patients. The clinic also provides drug information and pharmacy support to the physicians and other health-care providers at the Institute. [Pg.120]

Deborah DeEugenio holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. She completed a post- doctoral residency in pharmacy practice at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. DeEugenio is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Certified Anticoagulation Provider. Dr. DeEugenio is currently an Assistant Professor at Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia. She also works at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital as a clinical pharmacist for Jefferson Heart Institute and Jefferson Antithrombotics Therapy Service. [Pg.101]

ANDREW J. FLETCHER, MB, BChir, (Cantab), MS (Columbia), DipPharmMedRCP, FFPM was formerly the Senior Assistant Editor of The Merck Manual, and is Adjunct Professor of Pharmaceutical Health Care at Temple University School of Pharmacy. He graduated from Cambridge University and St. Bartholomew s Hospital, London, briefly trained in Neurosurgery, joined CIBA-Geigy in the UK as Medical Advisor, then European Medical Director for Syntex, and joined Merck, first in the international division after graduating in business studies from Columbia University, New York City, then as Assistant Editor of The Merck Manual. He teaches pharmaceutical medicine, bioethics and medical and scientific writing at Temple University s School of Pharmacy. He is a founder member and former trustee of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators (formerly the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians). Susan S. Baker, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of pediatrics at the State University of New York at Buffalo and codirector of the Digestive Diseases and Nutrition Center at Children s Hospital of Buffalo. Her research interests are in pediatrics, general nutrition, and the barrier function of the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Baker received her M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine and her Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She recently completed service as chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition and chair of the American Board of Pediatrics Gastroenterology Sub Board.
