Polyester sheet products may be produced from amorphous poly(ethylene terephalate) (PET) or partiaHy crystallized PET. Acid-modified (PETA) and glycol modified (PETG) resins are used to make ultraclear sheet for packaging. Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) has also been used in sheet form. Liquid-crystal polyester resins are recent entries into the market for specialty sheet. Some cast (unoriented) polypropylene film is produced. Its clarity and heat sealabiUty make it ideal for textile packaging and overwrap. The use of copolymers with ethylene improves low temperature impact, which is the primary problem with unoriented PP film. Orientation improves the clarity and stiffness of polypropylene film, and dramatically increases low temperature impact strength. BOPP film, however, is not readily heat-sealed and so is coextmded or coated with resins with lower melting points than the polypropylene shrinkage temperature. Margarine and butter contain fat plus water and water-soluble ingredients, eg, salt and milk soHds that impart flavor and color to the product. Polyester. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) [25038-59-9] (PET) polyester film has intermediate gas- and water- vapor barrier properties, very high tensile and impact strengths, and high temperature resistance (see Polyesters, thermoplastic). AppHcations include use as an outer web in laminations to protect aluminum foil. It is coated with PVDC to function as the flat or sealing web for vacuum/gas flush packaged processed meat, cheese, or fresh pasta. [Pg.452]

Steam-Chest Expansion. In steam-chest expansion the resin beads in which gas is already present are poured into molds into which steam is injected. The steam increases the temperature close to the melting point and expands within the stmcture to create beads with food cushioning and insulating properties. Thermoforming. Thermoforming is the most common method of fabricating sheet into three-dimensional packaging. In conventional thermoforming, the sheet is heated to its softening point or just below the melting temperature. The softened plastic is forced by differential air pressure into an open-top mold to assume the shape of the female mold. The mold is chilled and the plastic sheet solidifies and is then removed from the mold. [Pg.454]

In commercial practice, packaging is produced from continuous web on intermittent-motion thermoforming/die-cut machines. The web edge is clamped and conveyed into a heating box. If a plastic with a narrow softening temperature is used, heating is carefully controUed from top and bottom. [Pg.454]
