Great Exhibition

Jet was at the height of its popularity. A display of Whitby jet at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London attracted international attention and orders even came in from foreign royalty.

Cardwell, Fontana History of Technology, 1994, p. 260. Son of a village shoemaker, Richard Roberts moved to Manchester and created a wide range of machines and products (including cast iron billiard tables for the termite-infested colonies).
