Laborelec is the Belgian laboratory for the electricity industry. It deals with measuring and studying problems arising with the production, transport and distribution of electricity to industrial and private customers. It has developed very diverse domains of expertise, such as acoustics, material characteristics, technical audits to telecommunications, vibrations monitoring, etc... [Pg.1023]

Special optical fibres have been intensively investigated during recent years because of their potential wide-range use for on-line monitoring of material properties or processes in a number of areas of human activity (environment protection, food industry, medicine etc.) Their technology can be considered an integral part of the team-work on optical fibre sensors development. Despite special optical fibres represent a unique and often indispensable tool for a variety of sensor applications, special fibre production still represents only a small fraction of the market. Probably it is because of their low consumption (in comparison with standard telecommunication fibres), the need for much more advanced know-how and lower reproducibility. [Pg.74]

Nowadays the electronic appliances used for entertainment, telecommunications and data processing are widespread in daily life. Typical examples include televisions, video recorders, hi-fi systems and fax machines, not to mention computers with their peripherals such as monitors and printers, scanners and copiers. These devices are predominantly made of polymeric components and materials which might contain additives, such as flame retardants and plasticizers (Wensing, Uhde and Salthammer, 2005) to obtain specific desired properties. In addition, there will also be chemical residues from production and processing aids, such as residual monomers and solvents. Especially under operating conditions these compounds can be released from electronic equipment into indoor air due to the heating-up of the device interior. In many cases, such emissions can be monitored via simple odor tests (Walpot, 1996). [Pg.405]

Computers and computer telecommunications are integral components of the entire analytical and reporting process and control the data input, operation, monitoring, and data reporting functions in automated analyzers. Also, workstations have been used to integrate the operation of one or more laboratory analyzers. Individual analyzers and/or their workstations are electronically interfaced with large central data repositories on laboratory information systems (LIS) and/or laboratory automation systems (LAS) (see Chapter 18). [Pg.279]

Assign either an individual or a team to monitor all aspects of the new facility, not just the construction or the move (taxes, regulations, human resources, and telecommunications tdl play major roles in successful site accommodation, so these must be considered and handled as diligently as the budding or the relocating itself)-... [Pg.1490]

Historically, device monitoring away from the clinic was accomplished transtelephonically. In these sessions, the patient dons wristband electrodes attached to a device that transmits a rhythm strip over a landline. More recently, advances in telecommunication technology have enabled the use of cell-phone-based transmission of essential data directly to a clinic, where it can be viewed via the Internet. This remote monitoring can provide valuable alerts when certain clinical criteria are met (Figure 11.7). [Pg.189]

The electrical properties of polymers are of considerable importance in various applications—the insulation of electrical or telecommunication cables, electrical components, electrical appliances and accessories, printed circuits, radar and electronics. Semiconductors based on polymers should also be mentioned. It is also possible to use electrical properties for monitoring or tests without fracture on stmcture or properties such as sequence of polymerization, degradation, and transition temperatures. Let s discuss briefly some major electrical properties. [Pg.90]

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive applies to items such as household appliances, IT and telecommunications equipment, electrical tools, medical devices, monitoring and control instruments, toys, and lighting equipment. [Pg.93]

Centralized methods of sensor networking make impractical demands on cable installations and network bandwidth. The burden on commnnication system components, networks, and human resources can be drastically rednced if raw data are processed at the source and the decisions conveyed. The same holds true for systems with relatively thin communications pipes between a source and the end network or systems with large numbers of devices. The physical world generates an nnlimited quantity of data that can be observed, monitored, and controlled, bnt wireless telecommunications infrastructure are finite. Thus, even as mobile broadband services become available, processing of... [Pg.89]

In a divisional structure, each business operates as a self-contained business unit, each division possesses a full array of support services, although some services such as engineering and telecommunications are provided on a company-wide basis. For example, each has self-contained accounting, sales and personnel departments. Each division operates as a profit centre, making it much easier for corporate headquarters staff to monitor and evaluate each division s activities. [Pg.102]
