Special optical fibres have been intensively investigated during recent years because of their potential wide-range use for on-line monitoring of material properties or processes in a number of areas of human activity (environment protection, food industry, medicine etc.) Their technology can be considered an integral part of the team-work on optical fibre sensors development. Despite special optical fibres represent a unique and often indispensable tool for a variety of sensor applications, special fibre production still represents only a small fraction of the market. Probably it is because of their low consumption (in comparison with standard telecommunication fibres), the need for much more advanced know-how and lower reproducibility. 

Determination of the fibre type, including checking of the stated fibre type, is one of the most important preliminary tests. If no IR spectrometer is available, standard fibres can be most readily identified using the characteristic reactions according to Stratmann. For modified fibres or high-performance and speciality fibres the more complicated classification on the basis of solubility groups and their subdivisions or other methods of analysis have to be used.

The exploitation of lyotropic liquid crystalline order by Kwolek" to process Kevlar fibres established a principle—but one which was retained in the hands of specialized fibre producers. The extension from lyotropic to thermotropic polymers by Jackson and Kuhfuss opened the field to conventional thermoplastics processing. The variability of thermoplastics processing technology takes one into products of complex shapes and more complex flow histories and so an even greater interdependence between flow history, morphology and properties.
