Vendors. Database vendors provide value added processing of databases and offer search services, online and/or batch, or distribute CD-ROM products to database users. Vendors also provide the technology for accessing databases. 

External fraud is an act committed by a third party that leads to data theft, data loss, and function disruption. People with technology skills can access (hack) the computer systems of pharmacies to steal or manipulate patient information for financial or nonfinancial reasons. For example, cell phone service provider T-Mobile experienced ongoing security problems that led to the publication of celebrity Paris Hiltons personal information and the telephone numbers of many Hollywood stars (Brian, 2005). One can only imagine the problems that could arise if patient data contained in a pharmacy s database were to be exposed, stolen, or manipulated. 

Technology infrastructure often determines the effectiveness of the learning experience. The effectiveness of the underlying code, the design and fundamental scalability of the database, the server configuration, and available bandwidth are all essential considerations. Because internal networks often lack the speed and reliability required for compliance education purposes, many organizations are employing Application Service Providers for secure and specialized services outside the firewall of their internal networks. 

A third issue is the development of an architecture for providing location-aware services. Although I will focus on data users with smart handsets, the discussion also applies to voice users and data users with other handsets, with suitable restrictions. The first approach is a location-server architecture. In its simplest form, the user s location information is stored in a database together with customer information. This approach is dynamically populated by the location-determination technologies. The mobile user has the ability to direct any information service provider (e.g., Yahoo, Mapquest, etc.) to access the location information from this server. A number of details will have to be... 

Many database producers provide online access to thek databases or distribute thek databases on compact disc read-only-memory (CD-ROM) and so are also considered vendors or producer/vendors. Whereas numerical growth in vendors is indicated (Fig. 1), the success of the database industry is largely a result of the transition of the information industry from paper-based to computer-based services (see Computer technology Informiation RETRIEVAL, Inforitation STORAGE MATERIALS). Thus industry growth can also be measured in terms of the increase in use of computer-readable databases as exemplified by the number of searches. 

BRS Online Service contains over 150 bibliographic and full-text databases in the areas of biomedicine, science, technology, business, economics, humanities, and social sciences (37). BRS/After Dark is an after-hours PC oriented version of BRS Online Service, offered at reduced rates (37). BRS/Moming Search is available only in Europe and retrieves information from the BRS Online Service databank. BRS/Colleague provides access to the BRS Online Service databank, but it is a menu-driven on-line service designed for use by health professionals with or without on-line search experience... 

The web clients are often called thin clients in the enterprise application, because they do not directly query databases, execute complex business logic, or connect to legacy applications. Such heavyweight operations are off-loaded to the components in the web tier or business tier underneath in order to utilize the security, speed, service, and reliability provided by J2EE server-side technologies. The thin-client design makes the enterprise application scalable, and the development process simple and flexible.
