Target, targets roadmap

Although Europe is at the forefront in many fields, a lack of co-ordination and of well defined targets could make it less suited to commercial and industrial exploitation. But at present there are some efforts to fund and develop a scientifically sound and broadly accepted European roadmap. 

November 2002 The Technology Roadmap - suggested actions and targets based on published benchmarks for major fuel cell development programs around the world as well as in the UK. First, the oversight that Andrew Kaldor discussed might have been remedied had the petrochemical industry become involved in the industries of the future roadmap exercise when it was first proposed, which was more or less coincident with that timing. The technical goal for each of these Focus Areas is to gather sufficient information and validating experience on technology applications so that the responsible SDO or CDP can proceed with better data upon which to base requirements incorporated in its codes and standards. Each Focus Area is subdivided into key Target Areas, which identify important information needs for which information is required by SDOs and CDOs to fully develop codes and standards. Completion of RD D for the individual technical Target Areas, in conjunction with information distribution, is expected to result in the subsequent development of safe, performance-based codes and standards. The Roadmap will be implemented over the next five years as proposed in the timeline for the Focus Areas. 

When a target is chosen, there are guidelines that allow its systematic disconnection to a starting material. The roadmap of synthetic intermediates that results is called retrosynthesis. This section will describe several ways to analyze a molecule to identify key bonds for disconnection.
