Synthesis mechanisms

PUs microstructure and mechanical behaviour are strongly dependent on the synthesis method employed. The various methods for producing PUs can be differentiated according to the medium of preparation (bulk, solution, water) and the addition sequence of reactants one-step or prepolymer synthesis routes). [Pg.6]

In the one-shot method, factors like the different reactivity of isocyanate groups and the different hydroxyl groups of a polyol and a chain extender may affect the distribution of HS in the chain or even produce a mixture (oligomer) of diisocyanate-chain extender and diisocyanate-macrodiol homopolymers [4,24,25]. [Pg.7]

In contrast in the two-step polymerization technique (Fig. 1.6), in the first step of the reaction a prepolymer is produced through the reaction of a SS oligomer with an excess of diisocyanate, followed by chain extension with a short diol(urethane or ester) or a diamine (urea, urethaneurea, amide, or ester-amide) to form the HS and also to increase the overall molecular weight of the polymer. [Pg.7]

As the two-step method is more controlled, it produces linear PU chains, fewer side reactions and polydispersities near 2, which is an expected result of step-growth polymers [2,4,24], [Pg.7]

An ideal PU primary structure assumes a perfect alternating block copolymer. However, under practical conditions, the SS structure, as well as the urethane reaction, follows a statistical Flory distribution, which is why the HS formed is not perfectly alternating and the block length may vary [28]. [Pg.8]

Future applications will also be considered, in particular with respect to the use of these techniques combined with the NMR of other nuclei (Na, Al, Si) for the investigation of zeolite synthesis mechanisms (12-14). [Pg.104]

According to the aggregation state of the component elements and the method selected for starting and performing their reaction, several preparative procedures can be considered, such as melting (direct reaction in the liquid state), solid-state synthesis (mechanical alloying), combustion synthesis, etc. [Pg.561]

Good evidence has been obtained that heterogeneous iron, ruthenium, cobalt, and nickel catalysts which convert synthesis gas to methane or higher alkanes (Fischer-Tropsch process) effect the initial dissociation of CO to a catalyst-bound carbide (8-13). The carbide is subsequently reduced by H2to a catalyst-bound methylidene, which under reaction conditions is either polymerized or further hydrogenated 13). This is essentially identical to the hydrocarbon synthesis mechanism advanced by Fischer and Tropsch in 1926 14). For these reactions, formyl intermediates seem all but excluded. [Pg.3]

Environmental organic matter is a composite of humic and nonhumic substances, which is formed through operation and interactions of various biotic and abiotic processes. Humic substances are formed through both selected preservation (residue) and catalytic synthesis mechanisms. Both enzymatic and mineral catalyses contribute to the formation of humic substances in the environment. The relative importance of these catalytic reactions would depend on vegetation, microbial population and activity, enzymatic activity, mineralogical composition and surface chemistry of environmental particles, management practices, and environmental conditions. Selective preservation pathways would play a more important role in humification processes in poorly drained soils and lake sediments, compared with more aerated environmental conditions. [Pg.94]
