Subacute and chronic toxicity of alcohol and alcohol ether sulfates has been extensively tested in several animals and sometimes humans. The duration of the tests was in some cases as long as 2 years. When administered below the toxic amount no specific damages were observed in any of the species tested [333]. No severe side effects were observed in the study by Swisher, carried out with volunteers who ingested considerable amounts of anionic and nonionic surfactants over long periods [348]. Alcohol and alcohol ether sulfates have also been studied to determine their toxicity by percutaneous absorption in rats and guinea pigs [354-356]. Alcohol ether sulfates penetrate in the order of 1 ng/cm2/day and alcohol sulfates are less penetrant by a factor of 10. The surfactant absorbed was metabolized. Since it is known that human skin is less permeable than animal skin, only very small amounts of alcohol or alcohol ether sulfates can be absorbed even in the case of complete body exposure. [Pg.289]

The applications of a-sulfo fatty acid esters are widely spread as for other surfactants. In contrast to specifying to suppliers what chemicals or materials are restricted, it is useful to specify exactly what chemicals and materials are desired. Once a material or chemical is well characterized, and it is considered benign with respect to human and environmental health, it can be added to a preferred or positive list (i.e., P-list). Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) are a class of surfactants that have been used widely in the drilling fluid industry. The popularity of these surfactants is based on their cost-effectiveness, availability, and range of obtainable hydrophilic-lipophilic balance values [693]. Studies have shown that APEOs exhibit oestrogenic effects and can cause sterility in some male aquatic species. This may have subsequent human consequences, and such problems have led to a banning of their use in some countries and agreements to phase out their use. In general, the cleanup of oiled shorelines has been by mechanical, labor-intensive means. The use of surfactants to deterge and lift the oil from the surface results in more complete and rapid cleaning. Not only is the cleaning process more efficient, but it can also be less environmentally damaging because potentially less human intrusion and stress on the biologic community occurs and because the chemicals can make the washing more effective at a lower temperature. [Pg.308]

The neutral-lipid models (1.0, 1A.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0) at pH 7.4 do not explain the permeability trend indicated in the human jejunal permeabilities [56]. Octanol was least effective, with r2 0.01. This should not be too surprising, since we did note that the appearance of naproxen, ketoprofen, and piroxicam at the top of the HJP ordering was unexpected. Our expectations were based on the octanol-water lipophilicity scale, which clearly does not correlate with the HJP trend. Adding a sink condition to the 2% DOPC model (model 1.1) improves correlation (r1 increases from 0.33 to 0.53). The addition of cholesterol to the 2% DOPC/dodecane system made the model unstable to the surfactant-created sink condition. [Pg.239]
