One study that did feature nearly continuous measurement of O2 is that of Wallace and Wirick [60], who deployed O2 sensors on a mooring in the N. Atlantic Bight. Data obtained during the winter showed that storm events produced high supersaturations of O2 on time scales of hours and that, during more quiescent periods, diffusion across the air-sea interface and community biological respiration caused gas saturations to be slowly reduced. This work demonstrated that injection of bubbles substantially enhances gas invasion rates - a conclusion that follows from their observation that wave parameters are better than wind speed as a predictor of gas exchange rate. [Pg.69]

These pohcy statements are founded on the existing language and authorities in Clean Water Act Sections 303 (c) (2) (A) and (Bf EPA defined biological criteria as numerical values or narrative expressions used to describe the expected structure and function of the aquatic community. ... [Pg.2161]

Biocatalysis Chemical reactions mediated by biological systems (microbial communities, whole organisms or cells, cell-free extracts, or purified enzymes aka catalytic proteins). [Pg.607]

WAS Waste activated sludge, mg/L. The excess growth of microorganisms which must be removed from the process to keep the biological system in balance. Wastewater The used water and solids from a community that flow to a treatment plant. Storm water, surface water, and groundwater infiltration also may be included in the wastewater that enters a wastewater treatment plant. The term "sewage" usually refers to household wastes, but this word is being replaced by the term "wastewater". [Pg.629]

Cytokines are small, short-lived proteins and important mediators of local intercellular communication. They play a key role in integrating responses to a variety of stimuli in immune and inflammatory processes. By binding their cognate receptors on target cells in their immediate vicinity, these molecules participate in many important biological activities including cell proliferation, activation, death and differentiation. In... [Pg.1082]

In recent years, a wealth of information has accumulated on RCM reactions leading to 5-, 6-, and 7-membered carbocycles and heterocycles, so that it is impossible to refer to all the new, natural product-directed work. Therefore, we will concentrate here on a few selected examples that can illustrate (1) the progress made by the advent of the second-generation ruthenium catalysts C-E, (2) the use of RCM in concert with other innovative methodology, and (3) the use of RCM in total syntheses of newly discovered natural products which, due to an outstanding biological profile, have attracted specific interest by the synthetic community. [Pg.276]
