Tphe surface activity of block copolymers containing dimethylsiloxane units as one component has received considerable attention. Silicone-poly ether block copolymers (1,2,3) have found commercial application, especially as surfactants in polyurethane foam manufacture. Silicone-polycarbonate (4, 5), -polystyrene (6, 7), -polyamide (8), -polymethyl methacrylate (9), and -polyphenylene ether (10) block copolymers all have surface-modifying effects, especially as additives in other polymeric systems. The behavior of several dimethylsiloxane-bisphenol A carbonate block copolymers spread at the air—water interface was described in a previous report from this laboratory (11). Noll et al. (12) have described the characteristics of spread films of some polyether—siloxane block co-... [Pg.347]

The self-arranged ordered DNA structures decorated by Ag nanoparticles are effectively formed on the Si surface modified by APTES. The investigations have shown the commonalities and some specific features in the hybrid structures on smooth mica surface and modified Si substrates. Small number of regular structures on mica surfaces proved that binding force of DNA to the surfaces is much lower in mica-DNA system as compared to the hybrid structure based on modified Si substrates. Spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements have shown the contributions to optical response due to components in hybrid samples. [Pg.97]

The slow settling and consolidation after the suspension, reaching about 30% solids, have been attributed to the presence of unrecovered bitumen (Figure 9) (5) or to the presence of fine clays and amorphous materials, which either may hold amounts of water disproportionate to their concentration or may form an ordered floe structure at 30 wt% solids (4). One explanation emphasizes the possible role of soluble organic surfactants that modify the clay surfaces, the effect of strongly bound organic material on the minerals, asphaltenic components from... [Pg.674]

In the case of ionised solutes, an increase in the salt concentration results in a reduction in the electrostatic repulsion between solute molecules as may be predicted by the modified Debye-Huckel theory of dilute electrolytes (Lietzke et al., 1968). Therefore, for an ionised solute, as the salt concentration is increased, the electrostatic component of the solvophobic equation is increased, resulting in an initial decrease of the In k term at low salt concentrations. As the salt concentration is further increased the surface tension effects increase and In k increases. [Pg.85]

Impedance spectroscopy is an effective method for probing the features of surface-modified electrodes [20,21 ]. The complex impedance can be presented as the sum of the real, and imaginary, Zjj (o)) components that originate... [Pg.45]

Condensation with the appropriate components is widely represented in literature approach to fluoroaUcyl derivatives of oxazole. Fluoroalkyloxazoles are of interest due to their application as surface modifiers of hydrophilic polymers, polymeric films for second-order non-linear optics, effective herbicides, body-membrane penetration enhancers, and intermediates for the synthesis of unnatural a-amino acids [12]. Thus, the syntheses of the trifiuoromethylated 2-aminooxazoles 8 and 9 were performed by reacting commercially available trifiuorobromoacetone with five equivalents of urea or cyanamide in refluxing fe/t-butanol to afford the corresponding 4- and 5-trifluoro-methyl-2-aminooxazoles in 70 % and 14 % yields, respectively [13,14]. [Pg.424]

The influence of two carbon fiber fillers, the basic carbon filler (CF) and one with a surface modified by orthophosphoric acid residuals (PCF), on the kinetics of epoxypolycyanurate (EPCN)-TPU grafted semi-lPN formation and phase structure has been studied [329,330]. The TPU/EPCN semi-IPNs differed from TPU/PCN ones by the network component synthesized from the reactive blend of EO and DCEBA. The accelerating effect for the reactions occurring is observed by introducing the both carbon fiber fillers into the semi-IPNs studied. The authors [329] connect the acceleration of the chemical processes with the additional chemical reactions between the components and by the catalytic effect of TPU on cyanate cyclotrimerization, as well as by interactions of polymers with the filler surface. [Pg.198]
