Physically or chemically modifying the surface of PET fiber is another route to diversified products. A good example of a surface-modified lens is the Sola/Bames-Hind Hydrocurve Flite lens, introduced in 1986. The material for the commercial Hydrocurve lens, bufilcon A [56030-52-5] contains methacrylic acid and has a high affinity for protein and subsequent deposition. The surface of the Flite lens was chemically modified with the addition of diazomethane (190) to reduce the surface charge. Surface modified NO sensors incorporate an electrode surface that has been modified or treated in some way so as to increase the selectivity of the sensor for NO and promote catalytic oxidation of NO. An early example of such a sensor was presented by Malinski and Taha in 1992 [27], In this publication an —500nm diameter carbon fiber electrode was coated with tetrakis(3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin, via oxidative polymerization, and Nation. After the cleaning process, other techniques are used to prepare the surface of the substrate for coating. Some techniques include drying, surface etching, and chemical surface preparation. Examples of chemical surface preparation include the formation of an oxide layer or the monolayer assembly of an adhesion promoter on the surface. These processes modify the surface of the substrates so as to facilitate the subsequent deposition process. In surface preparation, frequently, the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of the surface is controlled to match the coating solution properties. Also for MALDI, there is a special case worth mentioning. Surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization (SELDI) is a technique that utilizes special sample plates [196, 197]. These have different modified surfaces, for example, hydrophobic, anionic, or antibody treated. Which type of surface to select depends on the application. After application of analyte the surface is washed according to a protocol leaving only the desired components on the target. Finally, a MALDI matrix is applied before analysis in the spectrometer. Based on well established silica chemistry, the surface of silica nanomaterials can be modified to introduce a variety of functionalizations [3, 11, 118]. The toxicity of surface-modified nanomaterials is largely determined by their surface functional groups. As an example, Kreuter reported that an apolipoprotein coating on silica nanoparticles aided their endocytosis in brain capillaries through the LDL-receptor [122-124]. Overall, silica nanomaterials are low-toxicity materials, although their toxicity can be altered by surface modifications. [Pg.247]

The separation of basic and metal-sensitive compounds is difficult on silica-based stationary phase materials, but these separations can be performed on vinyl alcohol copolymer gels.
