Because fiber frictional properties are so important in the conversion of staple yams to spun yams, ASTM D2612 has been designed to measure the cohesive force encountered in the drafting or fiber alignment of sHver and top under static conditions. This frictional force is affected by surface lubrication, linear density, surface configuration, fiber length, and fiber crimp. [Pg.454]

Graphites (natural or synthetic) are black semireinforcing fillers used almost exclusively in rotary shaft seal applications where surface lubricity and abrasion resistance must be enhanced (see Carbon, natural graphite). [Pg.477]

As the statistical models for rough surface lubrication and contact are established, a mixed lubrication model can be thus constructed in the following procedure. [Pg.118]

C12 to C20, primarily Ci6 to ( is), used as surface lubricants in the manufacture of food-contact articles. The method, which uses ethyl palmitate (Eastman Chemicals No. 1575 Red Label) as an internal standard, has been validated at 200 ppm total FAME [185]. Other FAME standards (methyl palmitate, methyl stearate, methyl oleate, methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate) are available (Applied Science Laboratories) [116], Worked out examples of additive determinations are given in the Food Additives Analytical Manual [116], which also describes a great many of indirect food additives, such as BHA, BHT, TBHQ, l-chloro-2-propanol, DLTDP, fatty acid methyl esters, w-heptyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl-gallate, sodium benzoate, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, sorbitol and phenolic antioxidants. EPA methods 606 and 8060 describe the CGC separation of phthalate esters (direct injection) (cf. Figure 4.2). [Pg.199]

Fabric Cleaning. The Kevlar-29 woven fabric was obtained through the courtesy of Naval Weapons Center. A special pair of serrated shears was purchased from Technology Associates for cutting the fabric. The fabric (2.5 cm x 18 cm) was placed in a Soxhlet thimble and extracted by 100 ml of chloroform for 24 hours to remove its surface lubricants (about 3% by weight). The fabric was then removed from the thimble and agitated in a 20 ml of hot distilled DMAc for 15 minutes, before it was placed back into the thimble and extracted for another 8 hours using fresh chloroform solvent. The solvent-cleaned fabric was dried in a vacuo at room temperature. [Pg.327]

Graphitic BN (h-BN) is used as lubricant with low friction in numerous applications. Compared to graphite the h-BN can be used as lubricant in an oxidizing atmosphere up to 900 °C as well as at extremely low temperatures, e.g., in space because no water inclusions between the atomic sheet layers are present (graphite always contains small amounts of water between the layers). Due to its excellent resistance against oxidation, its extremely low friction coefficient, and its chemical inertness, h-BN can be inserted into alloys or ceramics [105]. It can be used as a solid surface lubricant [106] or added to a liquid to get dispersions with lubricating properties. [Pg.17]

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) tests were conducted on surfaces lubricated with a sulfur-containing extreme pressure additive, dibenzyl sulfide (Baldwin, 1976 Bird and Galvin, 1976). The films can arise from the use of additives that contain sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine, bromine, or boron and the differences in reactivity are affected by the formation of protective layers. Triboinduced electrons are said to activate the formation of iron halides, iron phosphates and iron sulfides (Dorison and Ludema, 1985 Grunberg, 1966 Kajdas, 2001 McFadden et al., 1998 ). When a chemical reaction takes place, e.g., oxygen interacts with aluminum to form aluminum oxide, a large oxygen peak is seen at approximately 500 eV in the Auger electron spectra (Benndorf et al., 1977 Nakayama et al., 1995). [Pg.181]
