Effect of bed support. The structure of the bed, and hence K", is markedly influenced by the nature of the support. For example, the initial condition in a filtration may affect the whole of a filter cake. Figure 4.3 shows the difference in orientation of two beds of cubical particles. The importance of the packing support should not be overlooked in considering the drop in pressure through the column since the support may itself form an important resistance, and by orientating the particles as indicated may also affect the total pressure drop. [Pg.201]

As the bed depth increases, end effects (i.e., mass transfer in the region of liquid introduction and in the region where liquid drips from the packing supports) become less important. Such end effects tend to lower the HETP observed in short columns, such as pilot-plant columns. [Pg.73]

In addition to the open tubular capillary columns, packed capillaries, and even micropacked capillaries, are commercially available. These columns contain support material, have internal diameters that range from 0.6-1.0 mm, and have the main advantage of being able to handle larger sample loadings. This is useful since direct analysis, as opposed to split-analysis, can be used with very short columns that operate at relatively high efficiency. [Pg.473]
