Reinforcing rings

Commercial bellows elements are usually hght-gange [of the order of (0.05 to 0.10 in) thick] and are available in stainless and other alloy steels, copper, and other nonferrons materials. Multi-ply bellows, bellows with external reinforcing rings, and toroidal contour bellows are available for higher pressures. For most fans, blades are riveted to the back plate or hub respectively. For centrifugals, the blades are usually welded to the shroud however, they can be welded to both shroud and backplate. For some designs and classes of service, an extra reinforcing ring is welded to the blades between the backplate and the shroud. This is particularly necessary for large heavy-duty units see Figure 12-120B. 

A quick method for sizing vessel reinforcing rings (backing plates) for bracket supports is given by Mahajan (1977).

This total reinforcement area is greater than the required area therefore, a reinforcing ring 6 4 in. O.D., cut from a piece of NPS 8 Schedule 40 API 5L Grade A seamless pipe and welded to the connection with minimum size fillet welds would provide adequate reinforcement for this connection.

Nitric acid, HNOj, is considered an oxidizer above 40% concentration. It is shipped in bulk quantities in MC/DOT 312 tanker trucks. The MC 312 tanker is a small-diameter tank with reinforcing rings around the outside. The corrosive materials carried in these tanks are heavy. By recognizing the shape of the MC 312, you will realize that there is a corrosive material in the tank even though it may be placarded with the oxidizer placard. Nitric acid will be discussed further in Chapter 10. 

Corrosives are transported in MC/DOT 312/412 tanker tracks. These trucks have a small-diameter tank with heavy reinforcing rings around the circumference of the tank. The tank diameter is small because most corrosives are heavy. No other type of hazardous material is carried in this type of tanker.
