Support requirements

Each type of material requires different levels and types of support. For example, commodities require the least technical support, while technical and high-performance materials require the most. On the contrary, commodities require more investment in logistics than do high-performance materials. The impact on the business is subtle—increased R D support is a direct expense, and normally runs between 2% and 5% of sales, whereas increased logistics support is likely to be in the form of additional investment in storage and transport, showing up in financial statements as depreciation and maintenance costs. Depreciation must be written off over a period of years, which tends to conceal its real cost (and increases taxable income). While some companies do capitalize and depreciate R D expenses, this is usually avoided unless the work results in a patent. 

The following section will show that support requirements are partly generic and partly specific in character. The specific aspects are closely connected to the chemical composition of the membrane material.

The building bricks for the coating layers are ceramic particles. Generally, the particle size must not be much smaller than the pore size in the substrate to enable successful coating. The essential prerequisites for a support structure have been discussed above. But there are more factors to be taken into accoxmt. 

In considering support requirements, it is useful to distinguish between support requirements for the dip-coating and drying steps and the support requirements for the subsequent calcining and sintering steps. For the latter processes the most relevant factors are

A risk assessment analyses systems at two levels. The first level defines the functions the system must perform to respond successfully to an accident. The scope of the system generates many of the support requirements for the operations, usually provided by the system owner. The term requirement defines a bounded characterization of the scope of the system, and contains information essential to support the operation/operators. Some of these requirements include functional capacity, execution capability, operational usability, information needed to support validation, installation, commissioning, SLC documentation required, user s manuals, training, maintenance manual, system maintenance, system test plan, acceptance criteria, and regulatory compliance (e.g., Part 11). 

Review automatically assigned dependencies and select, as the first group of supporting requirements, these which allow to achieve given security objectives—prepare justification why some of the dependencies can be left unsatisfied. 

The FDA Review Checklists can be used by your internal QA team to self-regulate. Acting as FDA reviewers, they can confirm that your submission conforms to all format, content, and support requirements. And, of course, should the QA team find a weakness, you can correct and rereview prior to actual submission.
