Supply forecasting

By relating the supply forecast that has been presented earlier in this paper with the projections of future demand, we can arrive at the trend in the supply/demand relationship over the forecast period. The U.S. has been a small net-importer of sulfur values during most of the past decade. In 1978, the U.S. had a net deficit position of about 400,000 tons. With a short-term upturn in phosphate demand, both domestic and international, we anticipate that the deficit position will widen over the next year or so. Even though U.S. exports will likely increase due to rising prices for sulfur in the export market, U.S. imports will also rise. But, with the advent of large amounts of sulfur starting to come from the Overthrust Belt by the mid-1980 s, we believe that the deficit position will reverse itself and place the U.S. in a net export position. In the latter part of the 1980 s, we anticipate this surplus to widen considerably.

In contrast to an oil production profile, which typically has a plateau period of 2-5 years, a gas field production profile will typically have a much longer plateau period, producing around 2/3 of the reserves on plateau production in order to satisfy the needs of the distribution company to forecast their supplies. Obtaining of data concerning the chemical composition of water is critical significance for monitoring water reservoirs and forecasting the quality of drinking water from different water supply sources. A dry residue is commonly used with the methods AAS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS (analysis of liquid) widely applied for determination of water composition. Sales planning has to reflect the bidding process presented in subchapter 2.3. Fig. 20 illustrates the paradigm shift from demand fulfilment towards sales plan achievement, where demand forecast captures the role of a price-quantity bid that is cleared based on available supply and a certain sales flexibility. The sales planning mechanism is further described in the following detailed requirements.

A detailed supply-chain model, which showed that two days inventory was required to supply the forecast market demand, determined chlorine storage tank number and size. The minimum number of drums and cylinders of liquid chlorine required to be held on-site was also calculated from the supply-chain model. This approach was also extended to calculation of the number and size of storage tanks for products such as caustic soda, sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid.
