Organo-metallic compounds, on the other hand, behave very much like organic compounds, e.g. they can be redistilled and may be soluble in organic solvents. A note of caution should be made about handling organo-metallic compounds, e.g. arsines, because of their potential toxicities, particularly when they are volatile. Generally the suppliers of such compounds provide details about their safe manipulation. These should be read carefully and adhered to closely. If in any doubt always assume that the materials are lethal and treat them with utmost care. The same safety precautions about the handling of substances as stated in Chapter 4 should be followed here (see Chapter 1). 

Several manufacturers introduced products amenable for this solid-supported LLE and for supported liquid extraction (SLE). The most common support material is high-purity diatomaceous earth. Table 1.8 lists some commercial products and their suppliers. The most widely investigated membrane-based format is the supported liquid membrane (SLM) on a polymeric (usually polypropylene) porous hollow fiber. The tubular polypropylene fiber (short length, 5 to 10 cm) is dipped into an organic solvent such as nitrophenyl octylether or 1-octanol so that the liquid diffuses into the pores on the fiber wall. This liquid serves as the extraction solvent when the coated fiber is dipped...

In some cases, wastewater can be substantially reduced by substituting an organic solvent for water in the synthesis and separation steps of the production process, with subsequent solvent recovery. Specific pollutants can be eliminated by requesting specification changes from raw material suppliers in cases when impurities are present and known to be discharged in process... 

C18 column from different suppliers (3-5 pm of particle size) are commonly used for amino acid determination, with mobile phases consisting of an acetate or phosphate buffer and an organic solvent such as acetonitrile, methanol, or tetrahydrofuran. Organic solvents for HPLC are generally very good. There are three rules of thumb to remember always use HPLC grade solvents, buy from a reliable supplier, and filter your solvents and check them periodically with your HPLC. Most manufacturers do both GLC and HPLC quality control on their solvents some do a better job than others. The best way to find good solvents is to talk to other chromatographers. 

The processing of soybeans has been described in more detail elsewhere than can be done here (132-134). Oil is recovered today by either mechanical means or through the use of organic solvents. In the preindustrial revolution period, soybeans were merely pressed with lever or animal-driven screw-operated batch presses. Around the turn of the Twentieth Century, when soybeans became a viable commercial crop in the United States, steam-powered hydraulic batch presses were used. Today, electric-powered continuous screw-presses, often referred to as expellers (but this is a trademarked name for screw presses manufactured by one supplier), or continuous countercurrent solvent extractors are used.

An organic solvent, such as benzene or acetone, may be effective in removing grease films. Chemical suppliers also market preparations for eliminating such films. 

Table 4.5 illustrates the chemical resistance of a series of columns materials across a range of organic solvents and chemical solutions. This list is not exhaustive and any detailed information regarding the column s compatibility to a particular solution should be provided by the column supplier. 

As mentioned above, ionic liquids are now available from a number of commercial manufacturers and from many suppliers. Still, one should not forget that an ionic liquid is a quite different product compared to traditional organic solvents, simply because it caimot be easily purified by distillation, due to its very low volatility. This, combined with the fact that small amounts of impurities influence the ionic liquid s properties significantly [9] makes the quality of an ionic liquid a quite important consideration for many applications. 

Industrial interest in soluble polymer-bound catalysts has been closely linked to the development of ultrafiltration membranes with sufficient long-term stability in organic solvents. Membranes fulfilling these requirements were prepared first in the late 1980s. Today, solvent-stable flat sheet membranes and membrane modules are available from several suppliers. As for the viability of ultrafiltration in organic solvents, rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of dicydopentadiene with continuous catalyst recovery and recycling has been demonstrated successfully on a pilot plant scale over an extended period of time [5]. The synthesis of other fine chemicals by asymmetric reduction and other reactions has also been carried out in continuously operated membrane reactors (also cf Section 7.5) [6-9]. The extent of commercial interest in catalysts bound to soluble polymers appears to fluctuate at intervals. Amongst other factors, the price of precious metals can be a driver.
