Several manufacturers introduced products amenable for this solid-supported LLE and for supported liquid extraction (SLE). The most common support material is high-purity diatomaceous earth. Table 1.8 lists some commercial products and their suppliers. Nowadays, numerous matrices are being used, especially 3-nitrobenzyl alcohol (NBA) [58-60], 2-nitrophenyl octylether (NPOE) [18,58], and thioglycerol [16]. In particular NBA is a good choice for a first trial with an unknown sample. Similar to thioglycerol, magic bullet (eutectic 5 1 mixture of dithiothrei-tol/dithioerythritol) is useful for polar high-mass analytes such as peptides [61]. Di-, tri-, and tetraethyleneglycols [16,18] and triethanolamine (TEA) [18] are also applied. Liquid paraffin [62-64], sulfolane [65,66], concentrated sulfuric acid [67], and others [18,68,69] serve for special purposes. Several reviews on FAB matrices have appeared [19,20,56,57,70].
