Supplemental testing

Adding methyl -butyl ether (MTBE) to the gasoline pool. Of all the (cost-effective) organic fuel supplements tested, MTBE had the highest octane number. 

In practically all cases the residual DDT was reduced to less than 1 p.p.m. fresh weight. However, some of the apples used in the 1944 tests carried as high as 9.5 p.p.m. of DDT as surface residue, whereas subsequent deposits prior to washing averaged about 2 p.p.m. From these and supplemental tests it would seem that such small harvest residues of DDT... 

Of 12 different bodybuilding supplements tested, only one contained the amount of the hormone androstenedione listed on the product label. 

Desirable supplemental tests include measurement of bilirubin, amylase and serum lipids. Regular serum glucose measurements are desirable when Pis are used. 

A series of supplemental tests were made on chges comprised of a confined cylindrical 3/4-inch diam Tetryl pellet over which a square metal duct or tube was placed, with an oversize 1-5/8-inch diam pellet placed at each end as confinement for the shock tube then the assembly end was initiated. These tests were made to det the fragment pattern effect using the tubes with or without fins. 

In other independent tests, ConsumerLab.com, a privately held U.S. company that specializes in laboratory analysis of nutritional and herbal supplements for purity, strength, and truth in labeling, found that 15% of creatine supplements tested did not meet industry standards for creatine content, purity, and label claims. 

Group C of Table 9-3 consists of some special cases that had inconsistent, ambiguous, or puzzling results. Ethanol has been negative in all tests except the mouse dominant-lethal test. It should be tested further. More dose-response data and supplemental tests might be especially helpful. 

Table 5.3 shows growth in a series of different media with or without 2% FBS. None of the supplements tested gave maximum growth in the absence of serum but Mito + and Nutridoma gave growth similar to control values in the presence of 2% FBS, i.e. true... 

PBG and ALA are water soluble and concentrate in the urine, and are therefore measured almost exclusively in the urine in the clinical laboratory. PBG is in general the more important of the precursors, whereas ALA is used more as a supplemental test. 

Several diagnostic tests are available to detect acute HCV infection through detection of antibodies or viral target amplification. Antibody detection methods include enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and the recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA). Specific antibodies to HCV by EIA are positive in only 50% to 70% of patients during the initial onset of symptoms, but 90% of patients have HCV antibodies after 3 months. A number of viral antigens are included in the current version of EIA, resulting in a 99% sensitivity and specificity for detection of HCV antibodies in immunocompetent patients. Patients with autoimmune disorders may have a false-positive EIA and no detectable HCV RNA, in which case the RIBA may be used as a supplemental test to rule out HCV. Viral target amplification techniques are used to detect HCV RNA either qualitatively or quantitatively. Qualitative tests are more sensitive with a detection limit of up to 100 copies/mL and should be reserved to determine spontaneous clearance of acute infection. Spontaneous clearance of HCV can occur in 50% of patients within 3 months of the acute onset of symptoms. ...

Arahidopsis plants are sprayed with the respective compound and the isolated and labeled RNA is analyzed on the Arahidopsis chip. Subsequently, the resulting expression profile is compared with those in the compendium. This comparison is done by supervised learning algorithms like Support Vector Machine (SVM) [15] or Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) [16]. When the new expression profile groups together with profiles of a specific MoA in the compendium there is an utmost probability that the corresponding compound has the same MoA (Fig. 33.4). If necessary, the MoA can be verified by classical methods such as enzyme assays or supplementation tests, if available. 

The attached-X mosaic lethal test suffers from at least two disadvantages—(a) only lethals which are not germinally selected against in the F male will be detected (b) any lethal which is detected will be lost to analysis since by definition no Fg survivors will carry it. Nevertheless, for chemicals which have already been shown to be capable of inducing sex-linked lethals, the attached-X test outlined above is a valuable supplemental test for measuring objectively, and relatively easily, the frequency of sex-linked lethals which are mosaically expressed between somatic and germinal lines of the male.

The use of mutants, and in particular the supplementation test, are difficult when a single mutation of a fundamental metabolic reaction gives rise to multiple growth requirements, i.e. polyauxotrophy. This must be clearly distinguished horn polyauxotrophy resulting from polygenetic mutations, i.e. single mutations in several distinct pathways.
