Sulfur Dioxide and Sulfites. Sulfur dioxide [7446-09-5], SO2, sodium bisulfite [15181-46-1], NaHSO, and sodium metabisulfite [23134-05-6] ate effective against molds, bacteria, and certain strains of yeast. The wine industry represents the largest user of sulfites, because the compounds do not affect the yeast needed for fermentation. Other appHcations include dehydrated fmits and vegetables, fmit juices, symps and concentrates, and fresh shrimp (79). Sulfites ate destmctive to thiamin, and cannot be used in foods, such as certain baked goods, that ate important sources of this vitamin. [Pg.443]

Emissions control systems play an important role at most coal-fired power plants. For example, PC-fired plants sited in the United States require some type of sulfur dioxide control system to meet the regulations set forth in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, unless the boiler bums low sulfur coal or benefits from offsets from other highly controlled boilers within a given utiUty system. Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) is most commonly accomphshed by the appHcation of either dry- or wet-limestone systems. Wet FGD systems, also referred to as wet scmbbers, are the most effective solution for large faciUties. Modem scmbbers can typically produce a saleable waUboard-quaUty gypsum as a by-product of the SO2 control process (see SULFURREMOVAL AND RECOVERY). [Pg.10]

Hydrochloric acid reacts with sulfur only in the presence of iron to form hydrogen sulfide. Sulfur dioxide forms when sulfur is heated with concentrated sulfuric acid at 200°C. Dilute nitric acid up to 40% concentration has Htde effect, but sulfur is oxidized by concentrated nitric acid in the presence of bromine with a strongly exothermic reaction (19). [Pg.117]

A derivative of the Claus process is the Recycle Selectox process, developed by Parsons and Unocal and Hcensed through UOP. Once-Thm Selectox is suitable for very lean acid gas streams (1—5 mol % hydrogen sulfide), which cannot be effectively processed in a Claus unit. As shown in Figure 9, the process is similar to a standard Claus plant, except that the thermal combustor and waste heat boiler have been replaced with a catalytic reactor. The Selectox catalyst promotes the selective oxidation of hydrogen sulfide to sulfur dioxide, ie, hydrocarbons in the feed are not oxidized. These plants typically employ two Claus catalytic stages downstream of the Selectox reactor, to achieve an overall sulfur recovery of 90—95%. [Pg.215]
