It should be acknowledged that Risen utilized the concept of the ionic domains in ionomers (Nafion sulfonates, sulfonated linear polystyrene) as microreactors within which transition metal partides can be grown and utilized as catalysts (23-25). Transition metal (e.g. Rh, Ru, Pt, Ag) cations were sorbed by these ionomers from aqueous solutions and preferentially aggregated within the pre-existing clusters of fixed anions. Then, the ionomers were dehydrated, heated and reduced to the metallic state with Hg. Risen discussed the idea of utilizing ionomeric heterophasic morphology to tailor the size and size distributions of the incorporated metal particles. The affected particle sizes in Nafion were observed, by electron microscopy, to be in the range of 25-40 A, which indeed is of the established order of cluster sizes in the pre-modified ionomer. 

Since nonionic carbohydrate-derived surfactants are available in sufficient quantities and at competitive costs at present, anionic versirais of these chemicals such as carboxylates, sulfates, and phosphates are less common. Until now there have been only a few products (anionic derivatives of APG) established in the market [29]. Indeed, the derivatization of neutral sugar-based surfactants to furnish anionic compounds is not easy at a competitive cost with the sulfate (alcohol ether sulfates, AES) and sulfonate (linear alkylbenzene sulfcaiates, LAS) surfactants derived from petrochemicals. Within this context, uronate derivatives possessing carboxylate functionality represent attractive starting materials for the preparation of negatively charged surfactants.

Sulfonated hyperbranched PEEK was synthesized by the sulfonation of fluoro-terminated hyperbranched poly(aryl ether ketone) [86], These materials were used in combination with sulfonated linear PEEK for proton exchange membranes.

The dilemma in discussing environmental acceptability of petroleum sulfonates is (1) the dearth of environmental data on this class and (2) the diversity of chemical structures which makes biodegradation and toxicity information difficult to interpret. A logical approach is to look at the environmental properties of a prototypical structure that represents petroleum sulfonates, This structure would be an alkyl aryl sulfonate, and the best candidate is linear alkylbenzene sulfonate. Linear alkyl-benzene sulfonate (LAS) has been the focus of more environmental studies than any other surfactant, and it is a good surrogate for understanding the fate and effects of alkyl aryl sulfonates and petroleum sulfonates.

The Tg values of all S-hb-PAEK/S-LPAEK blend membranes were lower than 214°C (the Tg of the sulfonated linear analog, S-LPAEK was 214°C) and gradually decreased with the increase in S-hb-PAEK content. The Tg values of these membranes were 214,199,188,184, and 180°C for blend composition S-hb-PAEK-XX/ S-LPAEK with S-hb-PAEK-XX contents of 0,15,20,25, and 30 wt%, respectively.
