New natural polymers based on synthesis from renewable resources, improved recyclability based on retrosynthesis to reusable precursors, and molecular suicide switches to initiate biodegradation on demand are the exciting areas in polymer science. In the area of biomolecular materials, new materials for implants with improved durability and biocompatibility, light-harvesting materials based on biomimicry of photosynthetic systems, and biosensors for analysis and artificial enzymes for bioremediation will present the breakthrough opportunities. Finally, in the field of electronics and photonics, the new challenges are molecular switches, transistors, and other electronic components molecular photoad-dressable memory devices and ferroelectrics and ferromagnets based on nonmetals. 

Suicidal thoughts are one of the symptoms of depression. Paradoxically, one of the best-publicized dangers of SSRIs is their potential to increase the risk of suicide. This heightened risk is especially well established for children, adolescents and young adults. In their most recent analysis of the data, the FDA concluded that, when compared to placebos, SSRIs double the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in depressed patients up to the age of 24/ There also seems to be an increased risk for people who are older than 24, but the interpretation of these data is still disputed.8... 

An analysis of 19 deaths from PCP overdose that occurred in two California counties from 1970 to 1976 showed that 12 were accidental, five suicidal, and two homicidal. Eight of the 12 accidental deaths were from drowning. Blood concentrations ranged from 1,250 to 2,300 ng/ml. Virtually all patients with levels of 1,000 ng/ml or more had coma, with the possible evolution of death due to medical complications, seizures, or respiratory depression. Levels greater than 2,000 ng/ml were almost always fatal (12). 

This discussion brings us to the function of suicidal behavior. For some people, the function of suicidal behavior is to die, but not for everyone. Clearly the most lethal attempts represent a clear intent to die, especially if done in secrecy. However, many other times self-harm behavior is found to have a function besides death after a comprehensive behavioral analysis is completed with a client. For example, some clients have told me that cutting and burning themselves was related to boredom, anger, sadness, shame, uncertainty how to solve a problem, or even revenge toward someone who had hurt them. In 1960, Dr. Sidney Cohen s meta-analysis of 25,000 LSD exposures (derived from a large number of published reports) indicated a surprisingly low incidence of flashbacks and a very low rate of suicide. Almost all of them occurred soon after LSD use suicides thereafter tended to reflect the incidence in the general population.

A number of methods can assist in identifying and characterizing enol intermediates (as well as eneamine and carbanion intermediates) in enzyme-catalyzed reactions. In essentially all species of animals, including humans, serotonin is important in aggression (Kravitz, 2000). Relationships between CSF concentrations of a serotonin metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and human aggression were described in As-berg et al. s landmark study (1976), which showed a bimodal distribution among depressed patients. A meta-analysis of 27 studies, involving 1202 psychiatric patients, showed an association between attempted suicide and low levels of CSF 5-HIAA (Lester, 1995).

One analysis (Angst and Wicki 1993) showed agoraphobia in 2.6% of control subjects, 2.8% of subjects with major depression, 7.4% of subjects with pure panic, and 28.0% of subjects with both panic disorder and major depression. Similarly, the attempted suicide rate was 3.5% among control subjects, 5.0% in subjects with pure panic, 13.0% in subjects with depression without panic, and 28.9% in patients with both panic disorder and major depression. These data underline the importance of recognizing and treating comorbid depression in patients with panic disorder. 

An unsavoury case study of TA poisoning was reported by Kintz et al. proving the systematic and continuous scopolamine intake of children who were forced by their own mother to take 4-10 Feminax tablets per day for months. Evidence of scopolamine was achieved by LC-ESI MS/MS analysis of hair samples (Table 3). The Children survived and their mother had to face a charge of their offence [56], Moreover, TA were also misused to commit suicide sometimes in combination with alcohol and other drugs [125-127],...

Figure 17 shows a potential application of the MLP to the analysis of a multifrequency, reflective interferometric THz image of a suicide bomber. Each pixel, or group of pixels such as a row, is analyzed using a trained MLP. The resulting false-color image would indicate to an operator the presence of an explosive.
