The modified FMEA approach has been used by the API to develop RP14C. In this document ten different process components have been analyzed and a Safety Analysis Table (SAT) has been developed for each component. A sample SAT for a pressure vessel is shown in Table 14-4. The fact that Tables 14-3 and 14-4 are not identical is due to both the subjective natures of a Hazard Analysis and FMEA, and to the fact that RP14C is a consensus standard. However, although the rationale differs somewhat, the devices required are identical. (The gas make-up system in Table 14-4 is not really required by RP14C, as we shall see.)... [Pg.401]

In the third sequence, the diastereomer with a /i-epoxide at the C2-C3 site was targeted (compound 1, Scheme 6). As we have seen, intermediate 11 is not a viable starting substrate to achieve this objective because it rests comfortably in a conformation that enforces a peripheral attack by an oxidant to give the undesired C2-C3 epoxide (Scheme 4). If, on the other hand, the exocyclic methylene at C-5 was to be introduced before the oxidation reaction, then given the known preference for an s-trans diene conformation, conformer 18a (Scheme 6) would be more populated at equilibrium. The A2 3 olefin diastereoface that is interior and hindered in the context of 18b is exterior and accessible in 18a. Subjection of intermediate 11 to the established three-step olefination sequence gives intermediate 18 in 54% overall yield. On the basis of the rationale put forth above, 18 should exist mainly in conformation 18a. Selective epoxidation of the C2-C3 enone double bond with potassium tm-butylperoxide furnishes a 4 1 mixture of diastereomeric epoxides favoring the desired isomer 19 19 arises from a peripheral attack on the enone double bond by er/-butylper-oxide, and it is easily purified by crystallization. A second peripheral attack on the ketone function of 19 by dimethylsulfonium methylide gives intermediate 20 exclusively, in a yield of 69%. [Pg.218]

The rationale for these simple approaches to water treatment is the argument that these kinds of systems have minimal requirements for MU water and are therefore subject to a reduced level of risk. In practice, the validity of this argument is suspect but is difficult to prove because totalizing water meters are seldom installed on the MU water line. [Pg.178]

The ester 7-1 gives alternative stereoisomers when subjected to Claisen rearrangement as the lithium enolate or as the silyl ketene acetal. Analyze the respective transition structures and develop a rationale to explain these results. [Pg.609]

The set of points over which the minimum of

gradient method for the location of the minimum of the stability function, we advocate the use of direct search. The rationale behind this choice is that first we avoid any local minima and second the computational requirements for a direct search over the interpolated and the given experimental data are rather negligible. Hence, the minimization of Equation 14.24 should be performed subject to the following constraint... [Pg.239]

Another practice is to blind the trial, which means that the subjects are not privy to whether they receive the placebo or drug. In some trials, even the investigator is unaware of whether the subject is in the control or active group. This is called a double-blind trial. The rationale is to ehminate the possibihty of bias affecting the trial results. [Pg.182]

Possibly, the most common protocols used in the generation of azomethine ylides are those based on the in situ, fluorine-mediated desilyation of cyanoami-nosilanes developed by Padwa et al. (2). Typically, treatment of precursor 1 with AgF, in the presence of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD), led to the formation of the intermediate cycloadduct 2, which was subjected to immediate DDQ oxidation to give pyrrole 3. The mechanistic rationale invokes fluoride-mediated desilyation to form the intermediate anion 4, which then undergoes loss of cyanide furnishing the corresponding azomethine yhde (Scheme 3.1). [Pg.170]

In planning federally funded studies, attention must be paid to the current requirements for inclusion of sex/ gender and racial/ethnic minorities. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) policy, all clinical research must include female subjects and members of racial/ethnic minority groups, unless a clear and compelling rationale is provided indicating that inclusion is inappropriate with respect to the health of the subjects... [Pg.715]

Clonidine. As with the rationale for P-blockers in the treatment of social phobia, clonidine hydrochloride, an a-adrenergic agonist, has been used in an attempt to target the physiological symptoms of the disorder. In a case report by Goldstein [1987], one subject with social phobia who experienced a primary symptom of blushing was treated with clonidine 0.1 mg twice a day after trials with alprazolam, phenelzine, and propranolol failed to provide symptom relief. The patient reported a dramatic decrease in the frequency and intensity of blushing episodes after 1 week of treatment. At 4-month follow-up, his symptoms remained well controlled and he denied any side effects. [Pg.397]
