In this chapter we will discuss the results of the studies of the kinetics of some systems of consecutive, parallel or parallel-consecutive heterogeneous catalytic reactions performed in our laboratory. As the catalytic transformations of such types (and, in general, all the stoichiometrically not simple reactions) are frequently encountered in chemical practice, they were the subject of investigation from a variety of aspects. Many studies have not been aimed, however, at investigating the kinetics of these transformations at all, while a number of others present only the more or less accurately measured concentration-time or concentration-concentration curves, without any detailed analysis or quantitative kinetic interpretation. The major effort in the quantitative description of the kinetics of coupled catalytic reactions is associated with the pioneer work of Jungers and his school, based on their extensive experimental material 17-20, 87, 48, 59-61). At present, there are so many studies in the field of stoichiometrically not simple reactions that it is not possible, or even reasonable, to present their full account in this article. We will therefore mention only a limited number in order for the reader to obtain at least some brief information on the relevant literature. Some of these studies were already discussed in Section II from the point of view of the approach to kinetic analysis. Here we would like to present instead the types of reaction systems the kinetics of which were studied experimentally. 

Since the net charge on a protein is determined by the pH (see Chapter 3), sequential elution of proteins may be achieved by changing the pH of the mobile phase. Alternatively, a protein can be subjected to consecutive rounds of ion exchange chromatography, each at a different pH, such that proteins that co-elute at one pH elute at different salt concentrations at another pH. 

Dermal Effects. Humans that were experimentally exposed to 200 ppm of trichloroethylene vapor for 7 hours experienced dry throats (40% of the subjects), begiiming after 30 minutes (Stewart et al. 1970). The subjects experiencing these symptoms did not experience them when exposed in the same manner on 5 other consecutive days. These effects are presumed to be due to direct contact with the vapor. Skin irritation and rashes have resulted from occupational exposure to trichloroethylene (Bauer and Rabens 1974 El Ghawabi et al. 1973). The dermal effects are usually the consequence of direct skin contact with concentrated solutions, but occupational exposure also involves vapor contact. Adverse effects have not been reported from exposure to dilute aqueous solutions. 

It may be considered that in the hydrogenation reaction of coal, the coal is subjected to consecutive changes in components and reactivity which results in a consecutive molecular lowering.

This landmark discovery paved the way for the development of transition metal-catalyzed hydroboration. The conversion of an alkene into an organoborane intermediate has made this a valuable synthetic technique, particularly since the development of enantioselective variants.9,10 They serve as synthons for numerous functional groups11 and are often subjected to a consecutive carbon-oxygen, carbon-carbon, boron-carbon, boron-chlorine, or carbon-nitrogen24 bond-forming reaction (Scheme 3).

The diet treatments were level of phytate intake, either 0.2 or 2.0 g/day. Each level was consumed for 15 days, three consecutive repeats of the 5-day menu cycle. To provide 2.0 g/day of phytic acid, 36 g of wheat bran was baked into 6 muffins and two muffins were eaten each meal. Stool composites were made for days 1-5, 6-15, 16-20 and 21-30 and urine composites for days 6-15, and 21-30. Daily food composites were made, homogenized, freeze-dried and then analyzed to determine mineral nutrient intakes. 

In TaHe and Kocienski s total synthesis of lacrimin A (272), methoxyallene 268 was easily prepared via consecutive alkylations and subjected to acidic conditions to afford the presumed enone intermediates 269 and 270 (Scheme 19.48) [57]. Enone 269 underwent spontaneous spiroacetal formation to give a single stereoisomer 271 in 78% yield from 268. This compound was taken on to complete a total synthesis of lacrimin A (272).

There are different strategies for the selection of sub-matrices for evolving type factor analyses. The classical, original mode has been presented so far. The most important alternative procedure is based on a moving window of fixed size. In other words, a window of a pre-defined number of consecutive spectra is moved along the columns of the matrix Y. Each window is subjected to SVD, the singular values are stored and their logarithms are plotted.
