Studying with Classmates

It is not uncommon, especially among those who commute to campus, that students hardly know any classmates. For one thing, students go from class to class usually in a rush and hardly have time to talk to each other. For another, they may not have many classes in common. As a result students become loners as far as taking courses is concerned they go to a class alone and study alone. If you are used to studying alone and stiU excel in course work, so be it. 

The best place for group study is either a studying space designated by your program or in the group study rooms set aside by the university library.

Those guys didn t know how to treat their black female classmates. The women felt completely isolated... no one would study with them... and they always sat in class with me... Eventually, they dropped out of the program. 

Pattern puzzles are especially helpful when you are studying for your chemistry tests. Before tests, use your puzzles to practice sequencing and to review the steps of chemistry processes. You and a classmate can also take turns creating your own pattern puzzles of different chemical processes and putting each other s puzzles in the correct sequence. Studying with a classmate in this manner will help make studying fun and will enable you to help each other. 

Sleep improves a person s ability to learn repetitive skills, such as riding a bike or typing. Improvements in learning are connected to REM sleep. When the subjects are deprived on REM sleep, their learning ability is impaired. Canadian researchers compared the performance of students cramming for an examination without sleep with classmates who slept after studying. The students who slept retained more information. Sleep is a time when the brain can rehearse recently learned material, says James D. Walsh, Ph.D., Director of St. Luke s Hospital Sleep Medicine and Research Center. Get to Know Your Classmates There ate many good reasons fer getting to know one or two other students in your classes. You may want to study with someone from class, or if you are absent from dass, you have someone to contact to find out what the assignment is or find out what vras covered in class. Record the following infiirmadon on the course syllabi for all your classes the name of a student sitring next to you, his or her telephone number, and his or her e-mail address. 

Another possibility of getting at the critical aspects of learning is to follow individual pupils throughout the teaching sequence. It is then a question of not only focussing on the pupil, e.g. by repeated interviews. The important thing is how the pupil interacts with different influential factors, such as the teacher s practice, discussions with classmates and teacher, study of texts, and so on. One difficulty is that this influence may have a delayed effect. 

A few years later, Erasto was studying heat in his high school physics class. Erasto asked the teacher how his hot ice cream mixture could have frozen before the cooler mixture.The teacher stated that Erasto was confused. Erasto insisted that he was not confused, and the teacher said, Well, all I can say is that that is Mpemba s physics and not the universal physics. From then on, whenever Erasto made a mistake, his classmates would say, That is Mpemba s physics. But Erasto began to experiment with freezing hot and cold water. 

Although.was the only student to pass his prelims, he was not offered a job atd a prestigious department). But a white classmate who failed his prelims was later hired in the chemistry department. If anybody should have gotten a job there, it should have been.. It was the reality of the time. The university was open and fair with respect to black graduate students studying there, but they were not expected to get a job in the chemistry department. This was one of the better chemistry departments for blacks to attend graduate school. 

As I exited the plane with my classmates, I realized that relying on each other s strengths would be essential to our visit in Russia. Throughouttheten months that I spent in Russia, studying, traveling, working, and adapting to a new world, I learned some valuable lessons—assumptions differ across cultures, my way is not the only way, and be prepared for the unknown. 

As this chapter has highlighted, sensorial experiment procedures allow students with visual impairments to actively participate in chemistry laboratories, along with nondisabled classmates. The instructional materials developed require minimal need of peripheral equipment, have comparable preparation times and cost to traditional laboratories, and are properly designed to fulfill safety requirements. The incorporation of available technologies into these experiments makes it possible to adapt these chemistry experiments to the needs of students with sensorial disabilities. As these experiments are disseminated and implemented in chemistry laboratories, the opportunity to encourage the interest of students with visual impairments to study chemistry increases. The prospect is to change mistaken views about the potential, inherent in all, to contribute and enjoy science.

In my case, I had an unusual chance to pursue my education twice, in both instances at exceptional institutions. When I went off to college, I went with an intense desire to engage my teachers and classmates intellectually, to delve deeply into questions about life, about how and why we think and behave as we do. I went with a very open mind about possible majors and took full advantage of the opportunity to explore a wide variety of courses. I had no idea in what I would major, but I was fairly determined that it would not be math or science, fields in which I had little confidence that I could master, and frankly were fields that I had studied because my mother said they were good for me, a little like eating canned Brussels sprouts. 

When one of the authors was a freshman he witnessed an unbelievable event one of his high school classmates was flunked out at the end of the freshman year. The classmate was an excellent student in high school. At the time the university had a rule anyone who failed two-thirds of the courses taken was automatically dismissed. He virtually failed every course he had taken, not just math and science courses but also general education courses. What had happened Well he was observed to cruise around campus in his new scooter with a new friend every week riding on the back He hardly studied was too busy enjoying the newfound freedom as a college fteshman.
