Structural resources

In this section I show how embedded lead users deploy structural resources for innovation. One distinct characteristic of embedded lead users lies in linking the corporate R D world with the user world. On the one hand most of the embedded lead users were already users before th joined the firm [e.g. Leisures, 5 SportS] and are still embedded in user networks and environments fe.g. Sport3-5). That means they are in contact with users in their free time and can also draw on these resources external of the firm (Leisure 1, 5]. They discuss ideas especially with other close persons in the network and can assess both the perception of their own and competitor firms (Sportl-5,7 Health 2,4,6 Leisurel, 4,5j. [Pg.46]

On the other hand, embedded lead users are users themselves. During the communication with others and by own experience they have built need and solution knowledge about the product (categoiy) of their firm (e.g. Healths, 6 SportT). As th perceive this knowledge as relevant to innovation and firm R D, I found many cases in which embedded lead users use internal networks with R D to share the use information they hold  [Pg.46]

7 profit in any case directly by being mare competitive, and I profit indirectfy, because people talk about an improved product, and the market reacts and this impacts directly on die company and indirectfy on me. (Sport 3, embedded lead user) [Pg.47]

Frequent communication by embedded lead users not only increases their proximity to R D, but may also alleviate the flow of knowledge irom other organizational members, who are not users of the firm s products (Sportl). These employees might have the feeling, that their ideas are not valued 1 R D, as they do not have special knowledge, and hence hesitate to share information (SportT). This impacts negatively on the access of non-user employees to innovation related firm networks. One of my informants reported  [Pg.47]

Embedded lead users not only share their information actively, but also are contacted by R D frequently. In many cases I find that developers draw on internal users rather than externals, as they are easier accessible (LeisureS Healths). Adjusted specification, ideas, and prototypes can be discussed with users directly inside the boundaries of the firm. Cutting out external users in some stages of the innovation process speeds up these phases and involves frequent information seeking by R D, tapping the knowledge of embedded lead users  [Pg.47]

The discovery of carbene and carbenoid additions to olefins was the major breakthrough that initiated the tapping of this structural resource for synthetic purposes. Even so, designed applications of cyclopropane chemistry in total syntheses remain limited. Most revolve around electrophilic type reactions such as acid induced ring opening or solvolysis of cyclopropyl carbinyl alcohol derivatives. One notable application apart from these electrophilic reactions is the excellent synthesis of allenes from dibromocyclopropanes 2). [Pg.10]

The Navy should develop operational guidelines for the effective decontamination of its ships, bases, ports, airfields, and logistical chains—that is, make specific the joint doctrine expected as a product of the new Joint CBD Program requirements office in Office of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff/Director for Force Structure, Resources, and Assessment (OJCS/J8). Future Navy doctrine should discuss acceptable risks and evolve operational guidelines as to levels of decontamination and the levels of personnel protection that should be employed in order to minimize restoration time after contamination and maximize operational viability. [Pg.94]

Bird introduced a third level that is widely accepted. These management factors would be the additional conditions that allowed the root cause to develop that management could be or should be addressing. Examples can include a lack of policy and breakdowns structurally, resourcefully, or in systemic procedures. Basically, the question must be asked as to what the company was not doing that allowed a root cause to develop and what measures could be taken to prevent the occurrence. This manner of corrective action planning ensures that the reactive investigation can be used proactively to learn from past mistakes. [Pg.413]
