This work is not an attempt to look at the past and future of the pesticide problem from the environmental point of view. After the general discussion of pesticides properties and use in the USSR (Chapter 1), we look successively at the unexpected consequences of pesticide use, for the natural environment, humans, and for agriculture itself.This work concludes with Lessons Learned from Pesticides, food for thought for policymakers, ecologists, and farmers.

As we increase our knowledge and hope to learn from our past errors, it becomes important that we as a professional group servicing society continue our efforts to (1) minimize and reduce the uncontrolled and accidental release of petroleum hydrocarbons and organics into the environment, (2) improve our understanding of the overall behavior of these compounds in the subsurface, and the health risks associated with their presence, and (3) continue to develop sound strategies for the recycling, remediation, and restoration of impacted soil, water, and air. 

Now—the now that is a time beyond the confines of this story, a now in which this story is past—I do not worry the past as I did then. Now it is set for me in a way that it was not set then. Not set then because so recent, still to be relived in memory and learned from. Five days of river travel lay before us—undemanding, freeing the mind to rove and scan. 

One of the most powerful uses of BioPrint is to provide a basis for understanding and learning from past clinical attrition. This is accomplished by systematically prohling historical compounds in the BioPrint assays and using the BioPrint data set as context in which to identify patterns of in vitro activity associated with chemical series, with therapeutic target activity, and with clinical adverse effects. BioPrint allows data from proprietary compounds to be put in context with analogous data on nearly every compound that has succeeded (or not) in getting market approval.

Reflect on previous experiences of managing effectively to distil further learning from them. However, reflection on past experience will not advance your development to anything like the extent that would be possible were you to undertake a new stretching challenge.

The ability to innovate also involves learning from past mistakes, not just one s own. Mistakes and errors in practices can be both costly and dangerous but can be prevented from occurring successively if their causes are determined. This can be difficult because a near-miss scenario can be seen either as an infrequent event or as an averted disaster. The first reaction to this is usually to continue without changing current practices, allowing for similar mistakes to occur. Learning requires all levels of an organization to participate and create channels of communication to innovate effectively, as the inability to share experience denies new opportunities [13,29-40]. 

Before starting an on-site audit, plan the audit. Review past audits, note indications of possible problem areas and items, if any, that were identified for corrective action in a previous audit. If you are not already familiar with this facility, learn the type of product produced and how it is organized by personnel and function. What does your customer, that is, your superior or senior facility management, expect to learn from this audit ...
