Structure, Distribution, and Development

The various morphological aspects of pulmonary neuroendocrine cell (PNEC) system, comprised of solitary cells and innervated cell clusters, NEB have been subject of several recent reviews (12-15). This section will focus on morphological features of NEB indicative of their chemoreceptor nature and their potential role as airway O2 sensors.

The various immunohistochemical and molecular markers of NEB cells reported in mammalian lungs are summarized in Table 1. Only those markers relevant to the role of NEB as O2 sensor will be reviewed.
