Cold cracking

The physical properties of automotive enamels are in large part determined by the crosslink structure developed in the paint films during the baking process. Enamels which are not cured sufficiently (undercured) are generally sensitive to humidity and solvents. In addition, they may be prone to chipping and cold cracking. Faints which have been baked excessively (overcured) exhibit intercoat adhesion failure. That is, subsequent coats... [Pg.256]

In a thermoplastic acrylic automotive coating, a CAB is used as the pigment dispersion medium and at 15% concentration based on polymer weight provides better sprayability, increased cold crack resistance, better pigment control, better solvent release, and improved exterior durability. Realization of cold cracking of hydrocarbons requires application of high dose rates that cannot be reached when using gamma-irradiation sources. For this reason, electron irradiation is more appropriate for this type of oil processing. Modern electron accelerators provide the dose rates of tens and hundreds kGy per second sufficient for intense reactions of cold cracking. [Pg.371]

Comparison of the theoretical calculations of RTC and cold cracking kinetics with the experimental data for heavy crude oil (Zaikin and Zaikina, 2008) is given in Figures 15.20 and 15.21. The calculations using a self-consistent set of the design parameters are in a good agreement with the experiment. [Pg.377]

Cellulose acetate butyrate is used in a wide variety of coatings for wood because they provide many desirable properties (fast solvent release, flowout, and leveling excellent spray characteristics, nonyellowing, and cold crack resistance). [Pg.18]
