Another common theme that authors use to establish importance involves environmental impacts. For example, an environmental slant is used in the first sentence of the cyclodextrin article (P3, exercise 6.7), where the study of cyclo-dextrins is justified based on their role in soil remediation. The importance of work that benefits air or water quality and/or promotes green chemistry can also be stressed. Work is also viewed as important if it has cross-disciplinary applications. The safety of G-CSF stimulation in patients with CAD has been questioned in two recent studies. Hill et al. [138] report the results of administration of 10 mcg/kg/day of G-CSF for 5 days in patients with chronic CAD n = 16). There was no clinical benefit as assessed by exercise stress testing and dobuta-mine cardiac MRI. Additionally two patients in the G-CSF group developed serious adverse events related to the therapy (one non-ST elevation MI one MI causing death). Zbinden et al. The invasive endpoint collateral flow index was significantly better in the G-CSF treated patients when compared to the placebo group. The effects of coenzyme Q10 on coronary artery disease and chronic stable angina are modest but appear promising. A theoretical basis for such benefit could be metabolic protection of the ischemic myocardium. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated that coenzyme Q10 supplementation improved a number of clinical measures in patients with a history of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Improvements have been observed in lipoprotein a, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, exercise tolerance, and time to development of ischemic changes on the electrocardiogram during stress tests. As acute strenuous exercise and chronic exercise training increase the requirement for various antioxidants, it is conceivable that dietary supplementation of specific antioxidants would be beneficial. Older subjects may be more susceptible to oxidative stress and may benefit from the antioxidant protection provided by vitamin E. During severe oxidative stress such as strenuous exercise, the enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant systems of skeletal muscle are not able to cope with the massive free-radical formation, which results in an increase in lipid peroxidation. Although elasticity of vessel walls can significantly compHcate fluid flow analysis, biologically it provides important homeostatic benefits. For example, pulsatile blood flow induces accompanying expansions and contractions in healthy elastic-wall vessels. These wall displacements then influence the flow fields. Elastic behavior maintains the norm of laminar flow that minimizes wall stress, lowers flow resistance, and thus energy dissipation and fosters maximum life of the vessel. In combination with pulsatile flow, distensibility permits strain relaxation of the wall tissue with each cardiac cycle, which provides an exercise routine promoting extended on-line use. [Pg.113]

Exercisers by the nature of what they do put stress on chondral surfaces and wear and injury can occur. Those most interested in supplementation are rurmers and those involved in contact and cutting sports where ligaments can be injured. Many athletes injure or tear menisci, and chondroprotection is desired. However, there are no data in athletes to support any claims of benefit. The research that has been done has used individuals with osteoarthritis, and the supplements have been an adjunct to other therapies used at the same time.
