Vanadate (VOj or H2VO4 ) was first recognized in 1979 as having insulin mimetic properties [258]. Since then, vanadate and vanadyl (V ) have been shown to mimic most but not all biological actions of insulin in vitro and to lower blood glucose in streptozotocin-treated rats [259, 260]. Vanadate is a potent inhibitor of phosphotyrosine phosphatases, an interesting activity since the insulin receptor is a tyrosine kinase, and some of the actions of insulin have been proposed to take place via autophosphorylation of the insulin receptor and phosphorylation of cellular substrates on tyrosine residues [261]. Some recent developments on the mechanism and the in vivo activity of vanadate and its derivatives are presented here.

Some nitrosoamines have other biological effects than carcinogenic action. A/-(2-Chloroethyl)-A -cyclohexyl-A/-nitrosourea (4.15) has a cytostatic effect (Ferguson, 1975) and another A/-nitrosourea derivative, streptozotocin (4.16), is an antibiotic (Herr et al., 1967).

C. officinalis Sieb (Comaceae) is used traditionally as a tonic. The antidiabetic activity of this plant has been reported in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats when given per os [112]. Ursolic acid (0.14%), a pentacyclic triterpene acid, caused about 30% of reduction on blood glucose levels when administered for 6 weeks in high-fat diet mice [113], The main underlying mechanism of action seems to be mediated by the increase of the insulin-sensitive glucose...
