A variety of stitch types can be disassembled using this technology. Stitched joints snch as 301 lockstitch require the microwave-triggered thread to be present only in one section of the stitch stfucture. This means only the upper bobbin thread or upper needle thread needs to be made from the miCTowave-triggered thread to enable disassembly (Figure 7.3). [Pg.193]

Alternatively, bonded steel or fibre reinforced rods can be inserted from the sides of members in the joint area, in the direction perpendicular to the grain, thus stitching the timber fibres together and avoiding splitting (Fig. 9). A graduate student was using a rotary evaporator to remove solvent from a product. The student attempted to disconnect the round bottom flask from the ground glass joint of the vapor tube of the rotary evaporator but found it was stuck. As pressure and torque was applied the tube broke off just above the male fitting of the vapor tube. Stitching consists in the removal of cracked masonry units along the crack and replacement with new sound masonry units laid in mortar of adequate composition (Fig. 2). If necessary, some of the bed joints along the crack may be locally reinforced. To this purpose, steel plates are inserted in the mortar joints (Fig. 2). Old joints should be scraped clean and wiped with degreasing solvent new joints should be of scarf form made with a clean sharp knife. Belt drive joints should be stitched if an impact adhesive is used, otherwise the joint will creep under sustained high loading. A reactive adhesive that is flexible when cured is the most satisfactory for this purpose. [Pg.116]
