Steroid directed towards

Among recent examples that highlight the synthetic utility of transition metal-catalyzed hydroborations are its direction toward a formal syntheses of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents Ibuprofen 131 and Naproxen 13214 15 139 as well as the anti-depressant Sertraline 133 (Figure 14).140 In the majority of cases, rhodium-catalyzed hydroboration is utilized and the rhodium(i) source generally is Wilkinson s catalyst RhCl(PPh3)3. [Pg.864]

The difficulty of separating L-arabinose from L-rhamnose has already been noted, and, in a model study directed towards the analysis of steroidal saponins, it was found that a column of (cyanoethyl)sili-cone (XF-1105) was particularly suitable for resolving L-arabinose, D-xylose, and L-rhamnose.31... [Pg.46]

Other groups independently have used polyunsaturated ketosteroids as photoaffinity reagents directed towards mammalian steroid-binding proteins. Katzenellenbogen attempted to obtain site-specific photoinactivation and photoattachment of 6-oxoestradiol, Compound XII, to uterine estrogen receptor... [Pg.303]

The first steroidal kcat reagent was that of Batzold and Robinson (79,80) who synthesized the 5,10-secosteroids XV and XVI as reagents directed towards P. testosteroni steroid isomerase. [Pg.307]

On the academic side, W. H. Perkin made mention of unsuccessful experiments directed towards the preparation of benzocyclobutene in 1888. This compound was eventually prepared by H. Finkelstein, a student of J. Thiele, in 1909, as reported in his long-unknown Ph.D. thesis. Benzocyclobutene and biphenylene were also reported by Lothrop in 1941. Tropylium bromide was synthesized in 1891 by Merling, but its structure was only established in 1954 by Doering and Knox. The isolation and structure determination of the aromatic steroids estrone, estriol, and estradiol arrived only in 1929 (E. A. Doissy, A. Bute-nandt), 1931 (G. F. Marian), and 1935 (E. A. Doissy), respectively, with the advent of X-ray crystallography. [Pg.13]

Management of the ocular aspects of Reiter s syndrome is directed toward control of inflammation. The uveitis can be fairly severe and resistant to therapy. In most instances such topical steroids as 1% prednisolone acetate or 0.1% dexamethasone are recommended. Dosage is variable but in severe cases should be administered initially every 1 to 2 hours and accompanied by such cycloplegic agents as 5% homatropine or 0.25% scopolamine two to three times daily. Aggressive treatment reduces formation of synechiae and subsequent secondary glaucoma. In patients who have severe uveitis, either sub-Tenon s capsule or oral steroids may be used in conjimction with topical management. [Pg.473]

Therapies are directed toward treating the malignancy, decreasing the serum calcium concentration by saline diuresis, and decreasing osteoclastic resorption (bisphos-phonates, calcitonin, etc.). Steroids are useful in reducing intestinal absorption of calcium in l,25(OH)2D-mediated hypercalcemia. [Pg.1896]

In Fig. IB are shown the structures of the main steroid sex hormones of the three classes currently recognized. In each case there is good evidence that the compound is the main secretory product of its class. In Fig. 1C are shown three typical major metabolites of the first two classes. In these structures another convention is apparent. The nucleus is considered as lying more or less in the plane of the paper bonds directed toward the reader or above the paper are drawn as dashed lines and are designated a those away from the reader or below the paper are drawn as solid lines and designated An excellent account of these and other stereochemical features of the steroids will be found in Klyne s monograph (K9). [Pg.60]

Regardless of the pathogenic mechanism associated with pulmonary fibrosis, therapy should be directed toward attenuating the inflammatory and immune process (alveolitis) associated with the disease because therapy is much less effective once pulmonary fibrosis has developed. If possible, the agent inciting the alveolitis should be identified and removed, and steroid therapy initiated. [Pg.358]

Studies directed towards the remote oxidation of steroids have led to the unexpected discovery of selective free-radical halogenation. Irradiation of steroids Reference numbers are those of the relevant chapter. [Pg.277]

Extensive synthetic effort has continued to be directed toward the aromatic steroids exemplified by estrone— and toward the related 19-norsteroids— not only because of their practical medical and commercial importance but because they serve admirably as templates for the display of new organic synthetic methodology. [Pg.2]

Saponins constitute a structurally and biologically diverse class of molecule that are widely distributed in terrestrial plant and some marine organisms. The extreme difficulties associated with the purification of closely related saponins from a natural source provides synthesis with a realistic opportunity to contribute to the availability of homogeneous saponins. One of our current effort was being directed toward the total synthesis of bioactive steroid saponins from Chinese herbs. [Pg.196]

An immunogen for proscillaridin, a squill glycoside, can be prepared in the same way as that for ouabain, and the specificity is almost exclusively directed toward proscillaridin and closely related derivatives. Digoxin, digitoxin, and ouabain have only weak cross reactivity whilst steroids are totally ineffective as inhibiting antigens (Belz et al. 1973). [Pg.403]

Steroids are an extremely important class of natural and pharmaceutical compounds. Synthetic efforts directed toward steroids have been underway for many years and continue to he an area of important research. The synthesis of cholesterol hy R. B. Woodward (Harvard University, recipient of the Nohel Prize in Chemistry for 1965) and co-workers represents a paramount accomplishment in steroid synthesis, and it is rich with examples of carhonyl chemistry and other reactions we have studied. Selected reactions from Woodward s cholesterol synthesis and the questions for this Learning Group Problem are shown in the WileyPLUS materials for this chapter. Access those materials online to complete this problem. [Pg.895]
