Group learning

A good mentor or learning group would make you confront your untested assumptions. A book can only draw your attention to the possibility that you may be needlessly limiting your horizons unless you take a few risks and test your assumptions about your inner and external realities. You need too to question the value of solutions that have worked reliably in the past. Over-ready resort to tried and tested solutions can limit creative thinking for the present problem. 

This brings me to think of a far more learned group of friends and fellow coffee drinkers with whom I have been lucky to study this subject (none of whom is responsible for inevitable errors or shortcomings in this text). Among them ...

The Tokyo Chemical Society was formed in 1878. Within two years a periodical was inaugurated, later to become known as the Journal of the Chemical Society of Japan. In 1921, the Tokyo Chemical Society was reorganized into the Chemical Society of Japan. This learned group has cooperated with the International Atomic Weight Committee since 1899 (12). 

Your co-op learning group can write a radio show, including family news reports, live interviews, poetry, or headline news. 

Collaborative learning Group work (in class and online groups), discussion (in class and through an online forum)... 

So far, 70 upper secondary chemistry students from six different learning groups have visited, with their teachers, the non-formal laboratory environment on vanilla/vanillin in the university laboratory in Bremen. Prior to the visit, almost all students indieated that they look forward with great interest to the outreach laboratory experience. Almost 90% of students agree totally, mainly or at least partially with the statement that it would be important to do something different to the format given at school. This is a typical ratio like most other data on expectations fit those data gathered in the other modules.

The final Learning Group Problem for this chapter asks you to propose a scheme for biosynthesis of the marine natural product kumepaloxane by electrophilic halogen addition. Kumepaloxane is a fish antifeedant synthesized by the Guam bubble snail Hami-noea cymbalum, presumably as a defense mechanism for the snail. In later chapters we shall see other examples of truly remarkable marine natural products, such as brevetoxin B, associated with deadly red tides, and eleutherobin, a promising anticancer agent. 

This Learning Group Problem focuses on the chemical synthesis of small proteins, called peptides. The essence of peptide or protein synthesis is formation of the amide functional group by reaction of an activated carboxylic acid derivative with an amine.
