Steel rust prevention

The metal is radioactive and does not occur in nature, as the half-life of all isotopes is shorter than 5 million years. It is found in readily isol-able amounts in nuclear reactors. It is an effective "rust-preventer" for iron and steel in special applications. The metastable isotope "Tc has a half-life of only 6 hours and is therefore used as a gamma radiator in medicine (radiation therapy and diagnostics). Of very little commercial importance. [Pg.134]

Several steps can be taken to prolong the life of concrete. The first is to protect the reinforcing steel from corrosion by applying a rust preventative to the surface prior to embedding in the concrete mix. This keeps the steel from rusting if contacted by water and causing spalling of the concrete. [Pg.167]

Protecting rusted steel, rather than clean or new steel, may demand of a paint a different corrosion mechanism, simply because the paint is not applied directly to the steel that must be protected but rather to the rust on top of it. Inhibitive pigments in the paint that require intimate contact with the metallic surface in order to protect it may therefore not perform well when a layer of rust prevents that immediate contact. Red-lead paint, however, does perform well on rusted steel. Several theories about the protective mechanism of red-lead paint on rusted steel exist. [Pg.28]

When Cr is added to steel it reacts with oxygen in steel to prevent it from rusting. A Cr steel alloy would be used in any situation where the steel might be easily oxidized, such as when it comes in contact with water. [Pg.1177]

These contaminants may reduce the effectiveness of the natural oxide (passive) film that forms on stainless steels exposed to oxygen at low temperatures. If allowed to remain, these particles may corrode and produce rust-hke spots on the stainless steel. To prevent this condition, semi-finished or finished parts are given a passivation treatment. This treatment consists of cleaning and then immersing stainless steel parts in a solution of HNOj or of HNOj plus oxidizing salts. The treatment dissolves the embedded or smeared iron, restores the original corrosion-resistant surface, and maximizes the inherent corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. [Pg.432]

Often after fabrication, metal surfaces are protected by oils or a rust preventative to minimize the reaction of the surface with the environment. For example, an oxide-free tool steel surface will form flash rust immediately on exposure to the atmosphere. To prevent the flash rust a flash rust inhibitor is absorbed on the surface before the cleaned surface is allowed to dry. These additives may act as contaminants in further processing and often are removed by in situ cleaning in the deposition system. [Pg.27]

Care should be taken that the steel on the vacuum surfaces and sealing surfaces does not rust Small amounts of rust can be removed with a sodium citrate solution (one part sodium citrate to five parts water) without affecting the base metal. If the oxide on the steel is removed, the surface can be protected by a rust preventative . Pipelines are cleaned and inspected using pigs . Pigs usually have a steel body fitted with rubber cups and brushes or scrapers to remove wax and rust deposits on the pipe wall, as the pig is pumped along the pipe. Sometimes spherical pigs are used for product separation or controlling liquid hold up. In field lines handling untreated crude may have to be insulated to prevent wax formation. [Pg.273]

Rusting can be prevented by painting or coating with a continuous layer of another metal which does not itself corrode rapidly, for example zinc or tin. More recently, steel has been coated with plastics by electrophonetic decomposition from an emulsion of the plastic. [Pg.400]
