Sulfonates and phenates provide excellent engine antirust properties but phenates provide lower ash content at equal alkalinity when compared to sulfonates (Bartz, 1993 Bhushan, 2001a Pirro and Wessol, 2001 Stachowiak and Batchelor, 2001). The formulae of major classes of detergents are shown in Table 2.5. 

Brominated styrene grafted onto PET is capable of acting as a nonvolatile FR for PET fabrics [328]. Polyphosphate esters can be used as flame retardant plasticizers [204], phosphorus containing moieties act as color improvers and thermostabilizers in polyesters [198, 205]. Antistatic properties of copolymers containing moieties with sulfonic acids have been reported [107]. Some polymers, like poly(JV-vinylimidazole) impart anticorrosive and antirusting properties to protective coatings of metals [329].

PI incorporated in inhibited plastics and Cl significantly influence the physical-mechanical and physical-chemical characteristics of materials. The three-component composition-property charts presented in Fig. 4.24 help to estimate the effect of Cl and PI on the mechanical and antirust properties of composites. 

The material obtained combines elasticity of the polyurethane skeleton and wear resistance of the zinc component with the plasticity and lubricity of a gel-like filler. The presence of Cl in the material bulk and their isolation in response to mechanical loading of the seal contributes to the improved antirust properties of conjugated parts. 

Transport of gasoline and other refined products in steel pipelines may result in corrosion products that can create a product contamination problem. Internal corrosion of the pipeline can also have an adverse effect on pipeline capacity. Corrosion results from condensation of a water film on the pipe wall plus dissolved air or SRB in the product. Corrosion control is commonly achieved by adding a corrosion inhibitor. Evaluation of inhibitor performance can be done using NACE Test Method for Antirust Properties of Cargoes in Petroleum Product Pipeline (TM0172). This test method is a modification of ASTM D 665, Test Method for Rust-Preventing Characteristics of Inhibited Mineral Oil in the Presence of Water. 

Anticorrosion and Antirust Properties. A compressor lubricant must protect the valves, pistons, rings, and bearings against rust and corrosion. This is especially important in a humid atmosphere or in compressors that operate intermittently. 

Electrical polarization is a fundamental property of polymer materials transformed into electrets in electrical fields [86-88]. Electrical polarization is used to promote adhesion between layers of antirust film materials, limit permeability of the layers, impede wetting, reduce waterproof properties, raise the quality of printing and intensify Cl saturation [68,70,88].
