Hydraulics in the large-diameter piping have been revealed by one-third scale hot-leg pipe water experiments with an acryl pipe for visualization and a stainless steel pipe for vibration data accumulation (Yamano, 2010 Yamano et al, 2009). The experiment extended the pressure loss coefficient data against Reynolds number (Re) up to Re = 8 X 10. The results showed that the pressure loss coefficient saturates and there is no Re dependency with Re > 3 x 10, showing that the real scale with Re = 3.7 X 10 could be extrapolated from the one-third scale experimental data. [Pg.295]

Exhaust gas temperature measurements are made with a fine-wire R-type thermocouple connected to an Omega model 660 digital readout. Gas samples are extracted using a 6.4-millimeter (0.25-inch) O.D. water-cooled stainless-steel suction probe and then filtered, dried, and analyzed for CO, CO2, O2, UHC, and NOj . Instrumentation includes a Beckman model 864 NDIR CO2 analyzer, Beckman model 867 NDIR CO analyzer, Siemens OXYMAT 5E paramagnetic O2 analyzer, Siemens FIDAMAT 5E-E FID total hydrocarbon analyzer, and a Beckman model 955 Chemiluminescent NO/NOj, analyzer. Certified span gases are used for instrument calibration. PC-based data acquisition is available during experimentation. Figure 4(a) shows details of the test chamber. The teflon jacket-copper block assembly was mounted on a stainless steel plate. The sprayed liquid was drained back to the reservoir installed below the test section. Thermocouples to measure the liquid temperature were installed both upstream of the flow meters and downslream of Ihe orifiee plate. Another thermocouple was used to measure the ambient temperature. Bowing occurs in cryogenic transfer pipingwhen the pipeline is only partially full of liquid. Such a condition occurs during a normal operating cycle of a missile system when liquid trapped between valves is allowed to boil off. Experimental data[l] from tests on 8-in. and 12-in. uninsulated stainless steel thin-walled pipes partially full of liquid nitrogen indicated that the temperature distribution across the pipeline vertical diameter was as shown in Fig. 1. With the pipe half filled with liquid, the top fibers of the pipe did not cool substantially below room ambient temperature at steady state, while the bottom fibers of the pipe were at liquid temperature. As a result of this extreme temperature gradient, the pipeline tends to bow. For example, a partially full 8-in.-diameter 30-ft cantilevered section of pipe would deflect 35 in. at the free end. [Pg.111]

Life expectancy of pipes can also not be judged solely on the available pitting data these tend to vary a lot. Rate of penetration is not affected by pitting only impingement attack, erosion, etc., should all be taken into account. Pitting and preferential corrosion in the vicinity of welds make the available weight loss data of some austenitic stainless steels meaningless note the loss in local pits or in adjacent welds. [Pg.383]
