As a family of resins originally developed in the early twentieth century, the nature and potential of phenoHc resins have been explored thoroughly to produce an extensive body of technical Hterature (1 8). A symposium sponsored by the American Chemical Society commemorated 75 years of phenoHc resin chemistry in 1983 (9), and in 1987 the PhenoHc Mol ding Division of the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) sponsored a conference on phenoHcs in the twenty-first century (1).

The most important general test methods are issued as ASTM Test Methods and are periodically updated by the Polyurethane Raw Materials Analysis Committee (PURMAC) of the Society for the Plastics Industry (SPI). PURMAC has collected all pertinent analytical methods in a manual (271).

Nor is it tme that poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) packaging are hsted as 1 and 2 in the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) recycling coding system because they are the most recyclable. The numbers assigned to each plastic in the SPI coding system are purely arbitrary and do not redect the material s recyclabihty.
