Spy Hunters also drew on the nuclear theme with regularity. Spy Hunters 4 (February/March 1950) devoted three of five stories to atomic issues, while 7 (August/September 1950) featured an H-bomb as cover art. Spy Hunters 8 (October/November 1950) devoted one-third of its stories to the nuclear world, including one on the hydrogen bomb. Even the advertisements joined in. The US Royal advertisement in Spy Hunters 8, "After the Atom Spies," showed how owning proper bicycle tires could help bring enemy agents to justice. [Pg.79]

By the early 1950s, the various spy comics had begun to falter. Spy and Counterspy had folded in 1951, and Spy Cases, Spy Fighters, and Spy Hunters all expired by late 1953. Spy Thrillers survived only a year and a half longer. The reason for their demise was obvious. By this time, the atomic bomb, theft of which had become the backbone of the spy comics genre, had become an integral part of Soviet and American Ufe.
