Spelling tests

When evaluating individuals abilities to perform technical or physical skills, you may wonder whether it is wise to have them take a test of some sort. Unfortunately, tests can be legally problematic unless they have been determined to be both reliable and internally valid. Other than the standard keyboarding program tests for positions that require typing or data entry skills, grammar and spelling tests, and basic math tests, there are few validated tests available in the marketplace. 

Test yourself—Compile a Goof-Up list, consisting of words that you frequently misspell, or words that you will use often in work or school. Ask a friend to give you a weekly spelling test based on those words. Or, write out the words on your list, leaving blank spaces for some of the letters. See how many you can fill in correctly.

Only a few studies (Yule, 1981 Thatcher et al, 1983 Silva et al, 1984 and Lansdown et al, 1986) have incorporated spelling tests in their measures, and the results are less consistent. Significant associations (before controlling) were found by Yule, Silva, and Thatcher, but not by Lansdown.

Cognitive Tests. Schroeter et. al. studied hemodynamic responses to classic Stroop task where mismatch in words spelling out various colors [93]. Wide Range Achievement Test The Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) is used in children from age five years to adults in college. It assesses basic skills in reading, spelling, and mathematics. It is simple, easy to administer, and requires 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

There are two categories of words that are most problematic confused words (homonyms that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings) and misused words (pairs so often used incorrectly the errors sound acceptable to most people). Read through the lists of some of the most frequently tested words, noting any you re not sure of. 

Don t look for punctuation or spelling mistakes they re not being tested in these questions. 

Identifying Sentence Errors questions don t test your knowledge of spelling or punctuation, so don t waste time looking for those types of errors. 

Scoring evaluation This is another strong essay, although it tends to ramble a little bit more than it should. The grammar and spelling are excellent, and the personal illustration supports the original test question. The three parts (introduction, body, and conclusion) are easy to see, and the sentence structure has good variety. 

Provide a detailed description of the physical, chemical, and if applicable, biological characteristics of the container, closure, or other component parts of the drug product package to assure suitability for its intended use. Acceptance specifications and test methods performed by the drug product manufacturer for each packaging component should be spelled out.
