Classified problems that start the set and are grouped by type under a particular heading that indicates the topic from the chapter that they address. The classified problems occur in matched pairs, so the second member illustrates the same principle as the first. This allows you more than one opportunity to test yourself. The second problem (even-numbered) is numbered in color and answered in Appendix 6. If your instructor assigns the odd problems without answers for homework, wait until the problem solution is discussed and solve the even problem to satisfy yourself that you understand how to solve the problem of that type. 

Use this book in addition to your regular chemistry text. In several places we will refer you to your text for tables, and so on, that were too extensive to put in this book. We have tried to concentrate on those topics that we find most students have trouble. Pay particular attention to the Utterly Confused About... section of each chapter. These topics are the ones that we find are the most difficult for students to master. The Test Yourself section will give you an opportunity to see if you understand the concepts and should point out your weak spots for additional study. You will have to work and study hard to do well, but we are confident that this book will help you master the material and lift that fog of confusion. 

Since the volume of the material to be mastered can be intimidating, Chapters 5 to 19 present a comprehensive review of the material that you will cover in an AP Chemistry course. This is review material, but since not all of this material appears in every AP Chemistry class, it will also help to fill in the gaps in your chemistry knowledge. You can use it in conjunction with your textbook if you are currently taking AP Chemistry, or you can use it as a review of the concepts you covered. At the end of each chapter, you will find both a multiple-choice and free-response exam for you to test yourself. The answers and explanations are included. This will also help you identify any topics that might require additional study. 

In Step 5, you will complete your preparation by testing yourself on practice exams. This section contains two complete chemistry exams, solutions, and sometimes more importantly, advice on how to avoid the common mistakes. In this edition, the free-response exams have been updated to more accurately reflect the content tested on the AP exams. Be aware that these practice exams are not reproduced questions from actual AP Chemistry exams, but they mirror both the material tested by AP and the way in which it is tested.

Students frequently feel that they understand the material but don t do as well as expected on tests. One way to overcome this is to test yourself. Each chapter in the Study Guide has a self-test at the end. Work the problems in these tests without looking up how to solve them in the text. You ll find it is much harder this way, but it is also a closer approximation to what will be expected of you when taking a test in class.
