Specific regulations

The physical state of a pollutant is obviously important a particulate coUector cannot remove vapor. Pollutant concentration and carrier gas quantity ate necessary to estimate coUector si2e and requited efficiency and knowledge of a poUutant s chemistry may suggest alternative approaches to treatment. Emission standards may set coUection efficiency, but specific regulations do not exist for many trace emissions. In such cases emission targets must be set by dose—exposure time relationships obtained from effects on vegetation, animals, and humans. With such information, a Ust of possible treatment methods can be made (see Table 1). 

Marine transportation is done by ship or barge in permanent containers on board or by ISO containers. Propylene oxide can be shipped by air freight, but specific regulations for domestic and international transport must be foHowed. No shipment of propylene oxide can be made on passenger ships or airlines (3,233). 

The specific regulations of the U.S. DOT are found in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 49, Parts I00-I99. A key part of CFR 49 is Part 172.lOI a portion which is illustrated as Table 21-17. 

ERA promulgated the basic set of current ambient air-quality standards in April 1971. The specific regulated pollutants were particulates, sulfur dioxide, photochemical oxidants, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. In 1978, lead was added. Table 25-1 enumerates the present standards. 

Many but not all hazardous wastes can be disposed of on land in properly designed landfills. Toxic air pollutants are pollutants which are hazardous to human health or the environment but which are not specifically regulated by the CAA. These pollutants are typically carcinogens, mutagens, and teratogens. The CAAA of 1977 failed to result in substantial reductions in the emissions of these harmful substances. 

This is the primary legislation concerning the gas industry in the UK, together with certain section of the Gas Act 1972 and the Gas Act 1965 which have not been repealed. The Gas Act does not have great relevance to safety aspects of gas utilization. However, specific regulations can be published under this enabling Act. 

The Ca2+-binding subunit TN-C is homologous to calmodulin with four EF-hands.
